Avenatti now represents Stephanie Clifford, the adult film star who goes by the stage name Stormy Daniels, in her battle to be released from a nondisclosure agreement she made with Cohen ahead of the 2016 presidential elections. He denied the affair and initially denied knowledge of the payment, which Mr Cohen has acknowledged was meant to stop her from going public with the allegation.

A footnote in the 92-page document claims that the expense was not required to be reported on Trump's 2016 disclosure form, but "in the interest of transparency" says that Cohen was reimbursed without interest previous year for an amount in the range of USD100,000 to USD250,000.

The ethics office had received a complaint, calling on it to investigate whether the payment to Mr Cohen should have been reported as a liability on President Trump's financial disclosure report for 2016.

Telecom giant AT&T made a "big mistake" in paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to President Trump's personal lawyer to seek his help as the company pursued a merger that the administration opposed, the company said Friday.

He claimed that Trump may be in violation of 5 U.S.C. app. § 104, which says that the Attorney General can bring a civil action against someone who fails to report required information in their financial report.

The investigation began last week after Michael Avenatti, an attorney for adult-film star Stormy Daniels, detailed transactions in which large firms with business interests before the US government transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars to Essential Consultants, a company controlled by Cohen.

"It's not a loan, but he reported it anyway", Giuliani, the latest addition to Trump's legal team, told the New York Daily News, directly contradicting Apol's findings.

Mr Cohen, whose records relating to the settlement were seized in an FBI raid last month, is now reportedly under criminal investigation. Peskov says he saw Cohen's message but never responded to it.

He said as much to Vanity Fair earlier this month, explaining that he had "been approached by a number of networks who have explored the possibility of me possibly having my own show once the case is resolved, but I'm not seriously entertaining any of those ideas because right now, I'm focused on the task at hand".

These reports revealed Cohen's lucrative secret financial deals with numerous corporations inked shortly after Trump won the presidency.

"Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly", Cohen said in a statement to the New York Times.

"They funneled through a law firm, and the President repaid it", Giuliani said. The most recent report - the only one made public so far - examined Cohen's transactions from September of 2017 to January of 2018, and included activity totalling nearly a million dollars.

A prior disclosure made a year ago covered a 16-month period and showed $37.3 million in revenues for Mar-a-Lago.

The disclosure also shows President Trump's current net worth at $3.1 billion.
