  • Manchester holds mass singalong for arena victims on anniversary of attack

Ariana Grande has sent "light and warmth" to the victims of the Manchester terrorist attack. Prince William and Prime Minister Theresa May will attend. Salman Abedi, a British man of Libyan heritage, blew himself up outside the venue, but an investigation into how the attack came about is still ongoing.

"Today my thoughts and prayers are with those who were lost on that awful night, their loved ones who have so bravely battled to rebuild their lives; those who have courageously fought to overcome physical injury or mental scars; our first responders and emergency services and those volunteers and professionals who are continuing to help this community heal", May wrote.

A minute's silence - observed nationwide - was held at 2.30pm with tears inside the cathedral, where photographs of those killed were displayed on screens, and outside, where thousands watched in Cathedral Gardens.

Some of those who were at the concert will be performing at a special event on Tuesday evening as part of the Manchester Survivors Choir.

"I love you with all of me and [I] am sending you all of the light and warmth I have to offer on this challenging day", she wrote in a tweet that included a bee, the civic symbol of Manchester.

"Nobody will ever forget what happened but the way Manchester pulled together shows you everything you need to know about the people here".

"I stood out in St Ann's Square, with my arms out and a cardboard sign that said 'I'm a Muslim, I trust you".

They sang Rise Up by Andra Day before they held aloft 22 candles.

"All our thoughts today are with those who lost their loved ones and best friends", said Lord Mayor June Hitchen before the performances began, also paying tribute those who suffered psychological trauma and the emergency services which responded to the bombing - to massive applause from the crowd.

Later Tuesday, more than 3,000 singers from local choirs will come together to mark the anniversary in Albert Square.

Another passerby told him: "We're all the same wherever we are".

"We're a city in recovery and we've still got a long way to go".

Zoe Unsworth finished the night off with a couple of songs including Oasis' Don't Look Back in Anger, which acted as a symbol of unity in Manchester after the terrorist attack a year ago.
