  • Pompeo says US-North Korea summit 'up to Kim'

If it goes ahead, it will be first meeting between a USA and a North Korean leader during more than six decades of hostility, and it would come just months after the North's rapid progress toward attaining a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike America fueled fears of war.

Trump and Kim are scheduled to meet on June 12 on Singapore, although on Tuesday at the White House Trump said there is a "substantial chance" the summit might not happen, after a recent series of complaints from North Korea over certain aspects of joint exercises and comments from national security adviser John Bolton.

Meanwhile, a group of worldwide journalists is travelling to North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear test site to watch it being dismantled.

What did Mr Pompeo say?

"I can not suppress my surprise at such ignorant and stupid remarks gushing out from the mouth of the USA vice-president", vice-minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui said in a statement released by the state-run KCNA news agency.

The North's decision to close the Punggye-ri nuclear test site has generally been seen as a welcome gesture by Kim to set a positive tone ahead of the summit.

"A bad deal is not an option". The train fare was $75 (U.S.) per person round trip. If the right deal is not on the table, we will respectfully walk away.

"The model that we have laid forth is a rapid denuclearization that will be total and complete", he said.

Mr Pompeo has twice met Mr Kim in Pyongyang. "North Korea summit", Yoon said, quoting remarks Moon made during discussions with Trump.

Mr Kim "has shared candidly that he understands that economic growth for his people, the well-being of his people, depends on a strategic shift", he added.

The creator of the Rogers International Commodities Index (RICI) said he's been to North Korea twice, seeking investments but the US government is holding him back, Fox Business Network explained. Libya's longtime autocratic leader Moammar Gadhafi was killed several years later after a Western-backed military intervention. But the North unexpectedly pulled out of planned peace talks with South Korea last week, objecting to U.S.

"The kid has been trying to make a deal with America for three years". When asked if there could be an incremental approach, providing incentives along the way to the North, he said, "I don't think I want to totally commit myself". He's said he will succeed where his predecessors failed in persuading North Korea to give up its ambitions to become a nuclear superpower.

However, Pyongyang's professed commitment to "denuclearisation" is likely to differ from Washington's demand for "comprehensive, verifiable and irreversible" nuclear disarmament.
