Trump adviser Jared Kushner gets permanent security clearance

  • President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner had lost his'Top Secret SCI security clearance as part of a West Wing-wide review in February but got it back this week

Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators questioned White House senior adviser Jared Kushner about potential Russian collusion, his contacts with foreigners during the transition and obstruction-related issues, including the firing of then-FBI Director James Comey, Kushner's lawyer said Wednesday.

The New York Times, which first broke the news of Kushner getting his security clearance, notes that the process took almost a year and a half, which Trump administration officials claim was due to Kushner's complex foreign business dealings.

That means Kushner once again has access to the nation's most sensitive information.

The second interview occurred in April and concerned potential influence by foreign governments, including Russian Federation, and the firing of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, among other topics, Lowell said on CNN.

Lowell added that Kushner was not asked about his personal finances or his family's real estate business.

Kushner was with Trump in New Jersey the weekend before Comey was sacked, and he was among the attendees at a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer at which the president's oldest son was told he would negative information about Hillary Clinton. White House officials were adamant that the lengthy process was not unusual for a government official who has a complicated financial history and many foreign contacts. Porter's security clearance was held up for nearly a year while he worked on an interim clearance- though he continued to have access to nearly every classified and unclassified document coming in and out of the Oval Office.

The White House had blamed the delay on administrative backlogs that normally plague new administrations. He said career staff at the White House and in an intelligence agency, typically the CIA, generally make the decisions about restoring a clearance. "It happened the way it happens for thousands of people", Lowell said, noting, "There was nobody in the political process that had anything to do with it". That meant Kushner was able to see information only at the lower "secret" level, but not highly classified information.

Mr Kushner's legal team do not believe their client will face further questioning from Mr Mueller, CNN reported.
