Ceremonies to mark Memorial Day

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, the rows of headstones that mark the final resting place of over 400,000 USA service members should stand as reminders-as should all grave markers at each of our country's 135 national cemeteries-for us to take a moment to set aside our political caterwauling and focus on the objective of the solemn holiday: to honor the men and women who died in battle while serving in the USA military.

Monday - American Legion Bixby-Hansen Post No. 171 of Union Grove.

Emcee for the event will be John "Rock" Sommerrock.

Euclid - If You Value Your Freedom, Thank a Veteran parade, Monday, 10 a.m., from East 228th Street and Lake Shore Boulevard to the Veterans Memorial next to Euclid City Hall, 585 E. 222nd St.

Memorial Day Military Appreciation is scheduled at Tryon Palace in New Bern on Monday from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m.

At 5 p.m. Sunday, there will be food, music, skydivers and fireworks.

The parade starts this year on Pennsylvania Avenue and ends on Church Street at the Westminster Cemetery.

There will also be a Memorial Day event beginning at 10 a.m.at the High Sky Wing in Midland, 9612 Wright Drive.

The event will feature dinner and a keynote presentation by Gary Powers, son of captured pilot Francis Gary Powers, whose Central Intelligence Agency U-2 spy plane was shot down while flying in Soviet Union airspace.

David Shuey, actor and historian of History Teller Productions, will deliver the Memorial Day message.

Tickets are $100 per person or $175 per couple.

All proceeds will benefit the Bullock Building Restoration Project. Register at eventbrite.com/e/all-veterans-gala-tickets-43733582322. The drill team also will hold services at 10 a.m.in Rankin Cemetery.

The ceremony will include raising of the colors, a prayer, guest speakers, inspirational observances, a 21-gun salute, Taps, and a static display of a Colorado NG Blackhawk helicopter. Tribute will be paid to veterans interred at sea.

Activities will begin with a 1 p.m. event Saturday in Highland featuring the Fairfield High School Band and American Legion Post 568. Wreaths will be laid at the Grand Army of the Republic memorial, the names of of deceased veterans buried at the cemetery will be read, a rifle salute will be conducted and of Taps will played. Monday - The American Legion Essman-Schroeder Post No. 20 of Waterford announces these Memorial Day services: North Cape Cemetery, 8 a.m.; Norway Cemetery, 8:20 a.m.; St. Peter Cemetery, 8:40 a.m.; Waterford bridge ceremony, 9:30 a.m.; St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery, 9:45 a.m.; Oakwood Cemetery, 10:15 a.m.; Caldwell Cemetery, 10:30 a.m.; Honey Creek bridge ceremony, 11 a.m.; Honey Creek Cemetery, 11:10 a.m.; Rochester Cemetery, 11:30 a.m.; English Settlement Cemetery, 12:40 p.m.; Rosewood Cemetery, 12:55 p.m.; Rochester Parade, 1:30 p.m.; and Rochester Park program, 2 p.m.

10 a.m. - Keeler-Adams American Legion Post 1168 will hold a Memorial Day service at the Edgewood Cemetery, weather permitting. This is the approximate schedule of ceremonies: 8:15 a.m., leave the VFW hall; 8:25 a.m., St. Patrick's Cemetery (flagpole); 8:35 a.m., Glenwood Cemetery (circle in new section); 8:45 a.m., Outwater Park; 9 a.m., Ida Fritz Park; 9:15 a.m., Grossi Park (flagpole); 9:30 a.m., Summit Park; 9:45 a.m., Altro Park (flagpole); 10 a.m., Veterans Park (flagpole) / Soldiers and Sailors monument. Flags will be placed on all graves for the event.

Kinston's VFW Annual Memorial Day ceremonies will begin Saturday at 8 a.m.in front of the Lenoir County Courthouse. Ceremonies to follow at Soldiers and Sailors Cemetery and then at the Veterans Memorial Levee, Hastings RiverWalk at Ramsey and First Streets. Keynote speaker will be retired Lt. Col. Ralph Negron, a career Marine infantry officer who served in Vietnam. Emcee will be Bob Bernd. Participants include Barnstable Police Department Honor Guard and other special guests; the JFK Memorial Trust Fund Scholarship will be awarded.

The National Day of Remembrance Parade in Washington is an event that flies with marching flags and patriotic floats.

Waynesfield - 9 a.m. parade at the American Legion, 104 W. Wapakoneta St., traveling west to the cemetery. "We have many bands and units in this years lineup that are sure to delight everyone".
