The law allows the European Union residents to request data kept on them and adds restrictions to how companies keep data on them.

Privacy advocates have hailed the new law as a model for personal data protection in the internet era.

Belgiaum's Privacy Commission has been renamed the Data Protection Authority and received increased powers after the EU's General Data Protection Regulation took effect.

Violators face fines of up to 4 percent of annual global revenue or about 23 million dollars, whichever is higher.

This regulation, which has been in the making for seven years, replaced the 1995 Data Protection Directive, which was formulated well before firms like Facebook engaged in large scale data collection and profiling. This has proved to be very unpopular in online publishers.

GDPR was ratified in 2016. Even though it only applies to the European Union, any company that has any customers in the European Union has to comply.

What does the GDPR mandate? Twitter's also introduced a new "Your Twitter data" option in the settings menu that reveals how it targets you with different ads based on your interests. In fact, they have not consulted their customers about these data, and most customers have no idea how their data is being used.

Koo also announced that next year financial institutions and listed companies would be required to staff corporate governance positions to help provide their board of directors with information and assistance.

The right to object - This allows customers to object to their data being processed. "A company is expected to provide the same level of protection to relevant personal data that are covered by the GDPR, irrespective of where that data resides or where it gets transferred".

The group proposes, falls foul of the fresh procedures because imposing individuals to admit wide stretching information gathering in interchange for using a facility is forbidden under GDPR. Explaining this rule with an analogy, a director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation Danny O'Brien said, "A birthday cake company needs your name to put on the birthday cake".

The more sceptical among you may have thought it an odd coincidence that so numerous world's e-commerce and digital marketing companies had suddenly become so concerned about the integrity of consumers' data.

The serial Facebook petitioner and the Austrian lawyer, Max Schrems has registered data protection complaint against the social media giant and its subsidiaries.

The EU GDPR is forcing companies to be more attentive to how they handle user data with severe penalties for breaching their privacy rights. The complaints center on these four big players seeking to force "users to consent to targeted advertising to use the services". "Many users do not know yet that this annoying way of pushing people to consent is actually forbidden under EU GDPR in most cases".

Could this hint to these other companies' non-compliance? All the more that I became interested with this with my recent dealings with my internet service provider accessing my account information without me giving permission or them notifying me that they will do so. This includes, but is not limited to, control of the said information and the ability to request deletion of data, which the GDPR calls the "right of erasure".

How are smaller firms affected?

This level of enforcement is not the only risk to companies which fail to comply with GDPR however.
