Castroneves, Tony Kanaan, Sebastien Bourdais and Danica Patrick were among those who crashed in single-car spins.

Defending champion Takuma Sato of Japan collided with Jay Davison in Turn 3 of Lap 47 taking both of them out of the race. The final round of pit stops, starting with 28 laps remaining, was particularly tense, as every drop of fuel gathered or missed could have made the difference between winning and losing.

On a lap 145 restart, Rossi went high and passed two cars in turns one and two to get up to ninth. He managed his fuel strategy perfectly as Oriol Servia and Jack Harvey had to pit in the closing laps, and then made all the right moves to hold off pole victor Ed Carpenter to win his first Indy 500. He knew he had it won when he took the white flag all alone, and spent the final lap yelling to himself in joy as he drove away from the field. "Thoughts went through my mind during the month. My career, I've had so many wins, so many poles. that everybody always talks about the 500".

"Obviously just didn't finish the way we wanted". Power benefited from being in the first group, while Wilson was undone by being in the second.

"He hated ovals and now he loves them", he said.

"I just can't believe it", he said after the race.

"I can't describe it", Power told ESPN after the race.

"I don't know if fun was the right word; we were trying to take the opportunities that were given to us and execute with that we have". Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay rounded out the top five. Rossi had no choice: It was hard to pass in the 2018 vehicle on a day that fell just 2 degrees short - it was 91 degrees - of being the hottest 500 in history.

The temperature at Indianapolis Motor Speedway hit 33 degrees early in the afternoon, equaling the hottest 500 on record. "He will be here next year in one of our cars".

Penske said if Castroneves won a fourth, he'd get a chance at a fifth and the team confirmed that after the race.

Actually, he wore a black shirt to the Daytona 500, so that could be where that photo is from.

Still, she is respected and, in some cases, revered at Indianapolis, where fans remember her leading the 2009 race before finishing third.

She is also expanding her own athleisure clothing line, Warrior By Danica Patrick, and launched Pretty Intense, her new book focused on food, exercise and the mind/body connection this year. "When is the anthem?' But I had a lot of my people around me so I was in good spirits". It just didn't come on race day.

France's Sebastian Bourdais, back at Indy a year after he suffered hip and pelvic injuries in qualifying last year, three-time victor Helio Castroneves of Brazil and 2013 victor Tony Kanaan of Brazil also failed to make it to the finish.

Although this was not the ideal way to end her career, it seems like she was thankfully unharmed from the crash. She was the first woman to win an IndyCar race and her deal with Stewart-Haas in 2013 made her the first woman to get a full-time ride at NASCAR's top level.
