Tainted Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was arrested on Friday on rape, criminal sex act and other charges from encounters with two women, police said on Friday as he faced the first criminal case stemming from misconduct claims that scores of women made against him.

Disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein has been charged with rape and several other counts of sexual abuse involving two separate women after turning himself in to authorities in NY.

In October 2017, The New York Times and The New Yorker reported that dozens of women had come forward accusing Hollywood film mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual abuse.

Over the last several months, Weinstein has been accused by almost 100 women of sexual impropriety; so far, he has denied any allegations of non-consensual sex.

As Harvey Weinstein stood in court listening to prosecutors outline the charges against him Friday, the formerly powerful film producer mostly stood with his mouth open and his eyes low.

The case was adjourned until July 30.

After the arraignment, his lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, announced that Weinstein intends to plead not guilty.

"We obviously did not come here to try the case", Brafman said.

Besides the immediate satisfaction of seeing Weinstein face justice, McGowan said she firmly believes that his story, and the cultural quake that followed, will have a profound and lasting impact on how society treats powerful abusers who engage in sexual misconduct.

The New York Police Department issued a statement thanking "these courageous survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice".

According to the criminal complaint released by the Manhattan District Attorney's office, Weinstein, 66, "grabbed the back of informant's head forcing her head downward and forced her mouth onto his penis" in 2004 inside an address in Manhattan where Weinstein kept an office.

Authorities in California and London also are investigating assault allegations.

What are the official charges?

Rose McGowan says she was raped by Harvey Weinstein in 1997.

"At a certain point, you have to think about the greater good of humanity, of womankind", she said. Despite reporting the incident to the NYPD immediately, Vance's office declined to file charges after two weeks of investigation.

"The NYPD thanks these courageous survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice", police said in a statement. "Had he been held accountable years ago, there would be fewer victims of his sex crimes", Harrison said.

The rape charge relates to a woman who was not identified. Argento and McGowan accused Harvey Weinstein of rape past year and have been at the forefront of the crusade for justice against him. He consented to electric monitoring and is banned from traveling outside of NY or CT.

Weinstein has denied all allegations of non-consensual sex.
