Daniel Ricciardo defies odds to lay Monaco ghost to rest

But his team's hopes of an all-Red Bull front row were wrecked as team-mate Max Verstappen failed to take part in the session after a big crash in final practice. "I just wanted to see my name on top and keep that momentum going".

Ricciardo, Vettel and Hamilton have won two races each heading into the Canadian GP in two weeks' time. Nearly everyone was struggling with ripping the surface of their tyres and floundering for grip. Alonso, who competed in that event instead of Monaco past year, took to social media to say the famous oval was hosting the "REAL" race on Sunday.

"He lost about 25 per cent of the power of the engine".

The street circuit is notoriously hard to overtake at and the Australian benefited greatly from this fact, the victory all but confirmed with three laps remaining when a hasty virtual safety auto restart allowed him to pull away. And whether he could somehow hold on.

Ricciardo's knuckle gripping race of extraordinary tension began, not from his pole position start and race to the first corner, but on lap 28 of the 78-lap race.

Much attention focused on the Red Bull garage where a pack of mechanics worked to fix Verstappen's vehicle following his heavy crash in the closing minutes of final practice.

The Motor Generator Unit Kinetic is like a dynamo which charges the battery while helping slow the vehicle down. That means his rear brake temperatures are going through the roof. "Right now, there's still a lot to process but as I said, once it all settles I think yeah, I could probably say that". Was Ricciardo driving too slowly?

"I think that's more circuit-dependent, but I'm glad they're bringing the hypersofts again".

He was slow down the pit straight, the only DRS zone on the track, and it seemed inevitable that Vettel and Co would be cruising past. He thoroughly deserved that.

"It was two years in the making and I really feel that redemption has arrived", Ricciardo said after taking the checkered flag.

Time for a quick team photo! "Let me know if you want me to do it!'" Carlos Sainz (Renault) finished in tenth place.

He mustn't waste his awesome talent by brazenly brushing off so many incidents as unimportant or not his fault.

Ricciardo will be optimistic of grabbing his second win of the season, after victory in China last month, and seventh overall. We need him on peak form and with all four wheels pointing in the same direction, he's F1's future along with some other fast boys.

Behind him was Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari, followed by Valtteri Bottas in fifth place, but neither drivers could pass Hamilton in the latter stages of the race to take on the race leader.

Fortunately, Monaco is a race where power plays less of a significant role.

Hamilton has won the past two races and leads the championship by 17 points ahead of Vettel, who won the opening two races. The options open to him are another contract extension with Red Bull or a move to either Mercedes or Ferrari, both of which have drivers out of contract at the end of the season.
