The FBI said owners of any small-office/home-office (SOHO) routers should reboot their devices, but that won't fully get rid of the malware.
"VPNFilter is able to render small office and home office routers inoperable".
Just last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice announced that thousands of infected home and office routers are under the control of the Sofacy Group, a group that is said to be linked to the Russian military per numerous cybersecurity firms.
The FBI also suggests changing your router's password and updating the firmware.
ArsTechnica reports that later "stages" of the malware, which steal data and so on, are temporarily disabled during a reboot.
According to Cisco Talos' analysis, all of the devices impacted by VPNFilter have known public vulnerabilities. The malware attack targets routers and is under investigation by the FBI.
The attack is said to be from some Russian actors and devices in more than 50 countries have been affected by it.
Rebooting is a pretty easy process, usually requiring little more than holding down a reset button on the router, CNET explains. Visit your router manufacturer's website for additional information. Some models from Linksys, Mikrotik, Netgear, QNAP and TP-Link - mostly older ones - may be affected. The devices should then be secured with passwords and encryption.
The Justice Department said the FBI-controlled server to which infected devices are now communicating with will collect the IP addresses of each device. That way, you can set up the router again with the same information and all your devices will re-connect easily. The group is suspected of operating out of Russian Federation and has also been implicated in the 2016 attack against the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
