Islamic Jihad spokesman Daoud Shehab, acknowledging a ceasefire was in effect, said its success would depend on "whether Israel will refrain from any military escalation against Gaza".

Hamas' deputy chief in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, using the militant group's term for Israel, said in a statement that, "An agreement was reached to return to the (2014) ceasefire understandings in the Gaza Strip".

But late Tuesday, a spokesman for Jihad said a ceasefire agreement had been reached to restore calm.

Palestinians and their supporters said most of the protesters were unarmed civilians and Israel was using excessive force against them. We've given Hamas a chance to prove that we can return to routine.

"Hamas again chooses to act against the interests of the residents of the Gaza Strip and, after failing to improve the social order, and instead encouraging violence along the security fence, chooses to carry out and allow large-scale firing against Israeli citizens".

The Gaza Strip has also been under an inhumane Israeli siege since 2007. He said Palestinians want peace and Israel does not.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but there was speculation the mortars were fired by Islamic Jihad in revenge for a recent incident that left three of its members dead.

Egypt, which shares a border with both Gaza and Israel, stepped in and convinced Palestinian militant groups to accept a truce.

Israel said its strikes Wednesday hit drone storage facilities, military compounds, and rocket and munition workshops across the Gaza Strip.

At least 65 Palestinians were killed and more than 2,700 others wounded as the Israeli forces used snipers, airstrikes, tank fire and tear gas to target the Gaza demonstrators on May 14.

Israel's military had not commented, but Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz denied talk of a deal.

The Israeli military bombed numerous militant sites in Gaza overnight after Palestinian militants shot dozens of mortar shells toward Israel on Tuesday morning, with several of them hitting Southern Israel, including a kindergarten building that was empty at the time. "The resistance factions will abide by it as long as the Occupation [the group's reference to Israel] does the same".

"Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, on the other hand, said that he "[estimated] that there are indirect understandings with Hamas to end the current round of violence".

Due to the barrage of rockets being fired at Israel, the United States has called for an emergency meeting of the Security Council of the United Nations.

"Indiscriminate attacks against civilians are completely unacceptable under any circumstances", she said.

An earlier statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said that Israel was trying to reverse Indonesia's decision, but such efforts seem to have failed, prompting a reciprocal ban.
