President Trump considers pardoning Martha Stewart

President Donald Trump told media Thursday that he was considering pardons for TV personality Martha Stewart and former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

And the president said he might pardon Martha Stewart, of East Hampton, the food and home decorating author and television personality who served 5 months in prison on a 2004 conviction for securities fraud.

In April, the ex-governor's wife, Patti Blagojevich, made a plea for a pardon on Fox News. He's given us something that has been hard to come by recently... hope.

This is the fifth pardon of Trump's presidency.

"I'm in prison for practicing politics", Blagojevich's headline pleaded in Monday's edition of the Journal, earning him a swift "Pants on Fire" rating from fact-checkers at the Better Government Association and PolitiFact Illinois. D'Souza retweeted Trump's tweet but did not comment otherwise.

President Trump announced an out-of-the-blue pardon Thursday of a controversial conservative pundit.

But White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said it was unfair to suggest the only people winning pardons under Trump are those connected to him or with a celebrity backer. "What they did to him was awful".

He pled guilty, but claims it "a vindictive political hit" in response to his highly-critical 2012 film about President Obama, 2016: Obama's America, which, in turn, was derided by critics as character assassination.

D'Souza was sentenced to eight months in a halfway house and five years of probation.

In an opinion piece published earlier this month by Fox News, D'Souza said that in the Federal Bureau of Investigation file on his case, he was "red-flagged as a political conservative who made a movie critical of President Obama". Trump said he spoke to D'Souza "for three minutes last night...he nearly had a heart attack".

"D'SOUZA also admitted that he knew that what he was doing was wrong and something the law forbids", the statement read.

Both cases prompted critics to accuse Trump of abusing his pardoning power.

In August 2017, he pardoned Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who had been convicted of criminal contempt of court.

The announcement drew criticism from some Democrats and legal analysts who said the Republican president had undermined the rule of law with a series of pardons based on political considerations.

The 1913 conviction of Johnson, who was America's first black heavyweight boxing champion, has always been considered an egregious case of a racially tinged prosecution.

The US leader later said he was also considering commuting the sentence of Rod Blagojevich, a former IL governor jailed for corruption, and Stewart, the celebrity chef jailed for five months in 2004-05 for making false statements in an insider trading case.

Lauren Kaeseberg tells The Associated Press the sentence was too harsh. Four years later, he put out Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party, which heavily criticized Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party as a whole.

The pardon nearly immediately came under fire from the left.

Kevin Ring, president of Families Against Mandatory Minimums, which worked with the Justice Department during the Obama administration to help identify candidates for clemency, said that many are torn over Trump's decision-making process, which appears to be more haphazard than in the past.
