  • Russian journalist Arkadiy Babchenko killed in Kiev

Russia's senior-most lawmaker has pledged support for the family of journalist Arkady Babchenko, who was killed in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev on Tuesday night. Here's how the story unfolded.

Babchenko, 41, rose to fame as a war correspondent in Russian Federation.

Reporters Without Borders, a free press advocacy group, condemned the faking of Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko's death in an attempt to gather information on the Kremlin's alleged attempts on his life, as the nonprofit said "there can be no grounds for faking a journalist's death".

The journalist apparently did not tell his wife that the murder had been staged.

"I want to say sorry for what you felt".

It was not clear if Babchenko's wife Olechka was aware that his death had been faked.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement: "We demand that the Ukrainian authorities make every effort to promptly investigate".

I'm glad he is alive, but he undermined even further the credibility of journalists and the media.

Police in Kiev had said on Tuesday that Babchenko's supposed death had most likely been due to his work as a journalist.

Mr Babchenko, one of Russia's best-known war reporters, spoke and wrote previous year about leaving the country because of repeated threats that he and his family would be harmed. "I was told about it a month ago", Babchenko said.

At the briefing, Vasyl Hrytsak, the Head of SBU, stated that the death of Russian journalist was staged.

The freakish scenes were a shock to everyone - including Mr Babchenko's wife, who received an apology from her husband for faking his own death.

Babchenko had fled Russian Federation for Ukraine earlier this year, saying he no longer felt safe in the country.

"I can now reveal details of the SBU special operation, thanks to which we were able not only to thwart a cynical provocation, but also document the Russian special service's preparations for this low crime", Gritsak added. USA Today reported Babchenko strongly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's annexation of Crimea in 2014, the country's backing off separatists in eastern Ukraine, and Russia's involvement in the Syrian civil war, where it backs dictator Bashar al-Assad. The Ukrainian authorities are saying that in fact Russian intelligence services were behind a real plot.

The plane, carrying 92 people, including dozens of Red Army Choir singers, dancers and orchestra members, crashed into the Black Sea on its way to Syria in December 2016, killing everyone on board.
