  • Tennis rivals Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will face off at the French Open

Following a pectoral injury, Serena Williams has confirmed her withdrawal from the 2018 French Open ahead of her highly-anticipated clash against Maria Sharapova.

Williams first felt the injury, which she has never suffered before, during her third-round victory over Julia Goerges on Saturday.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion won her first three singles matches (and played three doubles matches, including one Sunday) at her first Grand Slam since capturing the 2017 Australian Open title while eight weeks pregnant.

She said: "Unfortunately I've been having some issues with my pec muscle".

"Now I wish her all the best because she's a fantastic player and I don't know how much longer it will take before she gets back to her old self, but I wish her all the best".

Williams admitted she now faces a race against time in order to be fit for the grass court season and Wimbledon. It was also her first since giving birth to Olympia in September. "I gave up so much, from the time with my daughter and time with my family. So it's really hard to be in this situation".

The American pulled out of the match just minutes before she was met to meant Sharapova in the fourth round game.

Russian 14th seed Daria Kasatkina stunned world No. 2 and Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 to reach her first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Williams added, "I can only take solace in the fact that I'm going to continue to get better, "per Bonnie Ford of ESPN".

"Plus I wanted to try different tapings and different strappings and lots of different stuff to see what was helping and what I could try in my singles match". It didn't really get a lot better'.

Since then, Sharapova has served a doping ban while Williams has just returned to action after having a daughter.

"I'm beyond disappointed", Williams said. I didn't manage to find the rhythm, to be focused on my match.

Williams' coach said the plan is to have an MRI scan to assess the damage of the injury.

She will face either 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza or Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine for a semi-final place. I've made every sacrifice I could.

"And I was one of the few people that, [with] her whole drug incident, I was, like, "She was fearless to say something". Because of the withdrawal, Sharapova will move into the quarterfinals.
