  • SpaceX goes for its 11th launch of the year early on Monday

It was the 56th launch of a Falcon 9 rocket, SpaceX's 11th flight so far this year and the company's fifth launch for SES.

The rocket carried the SES-12 satellite to orbit for the Luxembourg-based telecom company SES. SpaceX used one of its Falcon 9 Rockets to get the payload into space.

Running four days late because of unspecified technical issues, the previously flown Falcon 9's first-stage engines ignited at 12:45 a.m. EDT (GMT-4), generating a torrent of fiery exhaust and thick clouds of steam before vaulting away from pad 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The satellite could help broadcast television programs directly to more than 18 Million households in the Asia-Pacific region, along with the SES-8 satellite, launched in 2013 by SpaceX. The satellite operator, SES, tweeted, "What a handsome start to the week!"

The mass saving by using all-electric EOR technology enables SES-12 to combine two high-capacity missions, equivalent to two conventional payloads, in one spacecraft.

SpaceX won't land the booster again.

Instead, the satellite will rely on electric propulsion, using pulses of xenon gas to slowly circularize its orbit around the equator over a period of months.

Monday's launch attempt will try to send the 5.4-ton SES-12 communications satellite to a high transfer orbit. SES-12 is designed for an operational life of some 15 years.

The 12,000-pound SES-12 spacecraft, built by Airbus Defence and Space, will deliver high-speed data to across Asia and the Pacific. The company provides satellite communications services to broadcasters, content and internet service providers, mobile and fixed network operators, governments and institutions. "Ironically, we need to take it apart to confirm it does not need to be taken apart".
