The outlet reported that hundreds of homes have been destroyed, including the second home of the Big Island's mayor.

"We don't have an estimate yet, but safe to say that hundreds of homes were lost last night", Janet Snyder, a spokeswoman for Hawaii county, said Tuesday.

County officials said the two subdivisions have 279 homes, and most are feared destroyed from the most recent lava flows in the low-laying area. The lava pushed into beach lots in Kapoho, which has about 350 homes and Vacationland, which has about 150.

Hawaii Civil Defense Service officials said they went through the neighborhood to warn residents this was their last chance to evacuate before their final escape route was cut off by lava.

Overnight Monday and Tuesday, A wide and fast lava flow from Kilauea volcano's fissure No. 8 wiped out hundreds of homes in Kapoho and obliterated Kapoho Bay, replacing it with a almost mile-long delta of lava rock.

USGS' Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said Monday that parts of the channelized flow from a fissure were starting to break out and move north. Hundreds are now staying in emergency shelters. It's the second time lava has hit the ocean since the crisis began.

Snyder said from now on, the county will provide counts of homes destroyed.

Lava has now covered about 7.7 square miles of the roughly 4,000 square mile island, according to the USGS.

"I left a lot of things behind because I didn't want to feel as if I was abandoning my home", Rahmer said.

Those who live or vacation in the area were mourning the loss of popular tide-pools where kids enjoyed swimming.

About three dozen of those structures, mostly private homes and vacation rentals, were lost during the weekend in Kapoho.

"The difference between our June 3rd and June 5th images are dramatic, with lava completely filling Kapoho Bay by yesterday afternoon", a spokesperson for the company said in a statement.

"It's a handsome blue day, but it really seems eerie up there, lots and lots of ash covering areas near Jagger Museum and the earthquakes really make things seem very unsettled", she said.

About 2,000 residents have been displaced from Leilani since earlier this month as fountains of lava and high concentrations of toxic sulfur dioxide gas continued unabated.
