Republican House Speaker says Trump shouldn't pardon himself

In recent days, House Oversight Committee chair Trey Gowdy (R-SC) and Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) threw cold water on President Trump's unfounded accusations that the Federal Bureau of Investigation planted spies in his presidential campaign.

Gohmert didn't provide any evidence, and wasn't in the briefing with Gowdy and Ryan, but argued that unfounded allegations of spies infiltrating the Trump campaign is the latest indication a second special counsel is needed. "Let's just make that really clear".

The Department of Justice held two briefings on Trump's orders after House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., had asked for documents concerning the informant. Nunes has said the committee is still waiting for documents, and Ryan backed him on that Wednesday.

Gaetz went on to explain why he believed the foundations of the investigation into the Trump campaign were faulty. I think - but we have some more digging to do.

The comments come after Trump insisted in a series of angry tweets last month that the agency planted a spy "to help Crooked Hillary win", referring to his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

"This is about Russian Federation and what they did and making sure they don't do it again", Ryan (R-Wis.) told reporters, in comments excoriating federal law enforcement agencies for not being more forthcoming with documents that lawmakers had requested until Ryan personally intervened.

The department originally denied Congress access to any of the documents, citing national security concerns.

The Democrats are now alluding to the the concept that having an Informant placed in an opposing party's campaign is different than having a Spy, as illegal as that may be.

The Justice Department official said the new briefing would happen Monday or Tuesday, depending on members' schedules, and that DOJ is prepared to "brief members on certain questions specifically raised by Ryan and other members".

Gaetz hinted during the interview that some of the more conservative members of the GOP conference whispered Wednesday of revolt against Ryan over his comments.

"I have seen no evidence to the contrary the initial assessment that Chairman Gowdy has made, but I want to make sure that we run every lead down, and make sure we get final answers to these questions", Ryan said. On Thursday, Trump also launched a fresh wave of attacks against Mueller's probe - or the "Witch Hunt Hoax", as he called it - attempting to paint it as "biased and conflicted".
