  • John Beilein is returning to Michigan. Contract extension is being finalized per source

On Wednesday, Michigan head coach John Beilein announced on Twitter that he will continue coaching the Wolverines next season.

Multiple media outlets had reported last week that the Detroit Pistons were interested in Beilein to be their new head coach, replacing the fired Stan Van Gundy.

John Beilein has been a college basketball coach for 40 years, and he isn't going to switch tracks now. A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press earlier this month Beilein interviewed with the Detroit.

Beilein is Michigan's winningest coach and is entering his 12th year in charge of the program.

Beilein and MI are finalizing a contract extension, according to Brendan Quinn of The Athletic.

Beilein has worked continuously as a college head coach since 1978, with stops at a variety of schools before landing at MI in 2007.

Michigan's athletic director Warde Manuel voiced the same feelings.

John Beilein is returning to the University of MI. "Beilein had talked separately with Gores and Detroit management in process, league sources said". The Wolverines also made the title game in 2013 and have reached the Sweet 16 or beyond four times under Beilein. He has guided the Wolverines to two Big Ten titles, eight NCAA tournament appearances and two national runner-up finishes.
