Modi met Jingpin and sources reveal that PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping likely took stock of the progress of the two countries in implementing decisions that they had taken earlier at the Wuhan informal summit.

Prime Minister Modi had detailed discussions with President Xi on bilateral and global issues on the sidelines Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit here.

It is Modi's second visit to China in little over five weeks.

The entry of India and Pakistan could pave the way for greater three-way cooperation between India, China and Pakistan, former Chinese Ambassador to India and Pakistan Zhou Gang, told India Today.

President Xi Jinping appreciated Pakistan for its proactive participation in SCO since becoming a member.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday he was grateful to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his support for Iran's accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

On the bilateral relations, the two leaders highlighted that as all-weather strategic cooperative partners and close friends, Pakistan and China have always stood by each other and would continue to further strengthen this time-tested relationship.

Modi is also said that have acknowledged the Wuhan summit as a "milestone in relationship", one which would help develop mutual understanding and trust and take the relationship forward.

Tweeting about Saturday's meeting, China's envoy to India, Luo Zhaohui, said Xi and Modi had discussed the "implementation of Wuhan consensus and drawing (up a) blueprint for future China-India relations". Within hours of his arrival the prime minister had talks with the organisation's Secretary General Rashid Alimov. "Their first meeting will be held this year", Gokhale said.

Trade, investment and development cooperation issues will also feature prominently at the SCO, Murphy said, given the climate of "rising anti-globalisation and strains on global multilateral economic institutions", stoked by Trump's nationalist "America First" policy.

Talking about the outcome of the meeting, Gokhale said both the sides agreed to set up a new people-to-people mechanism to enhance cooperation in several areas such as art and culture. China is willing to work with India to see the Wuhan meeting as a "new starting point" and to cooperate so as to push ties in a faster and steadier manner, Xi was quoted as saying by China's state-run Xinhua news agency.

Gokhale said Xi referred to the growing popularity of Indian films and not only spoke about the success of the movie Dangal in China, but also mentioned that Baahubali 2 and other Hindi movies had done well in the country.

The grouping has traditionally focused on counter-terrorism and security issues, and India's hope is to bolster regional cooperation on combating terror.

The SCO leaders are also expected to review the situation in the Korean peninsula, Afghanistan and Syria.
