Angela Merkel on Trump’s G7 show: It’s ‘depressing’

President Donald Trump threw the G-7 summit into disarray Saturday, tweeting that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is "dishonest & weak" and that the US was pulling back its endorsement of the group's communique in part because of what he called Trudeau's "false statements" at a news conference.

US President Donald Trump was due to leave the Group of Seven (G7) meeting earlier than other leaders to head to Singapore for a much-anticipated summit with North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un on June 12.

He fired off furious tweets saying he told United States representatives "not to endorse the Communique" and accusing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - who hosted the summit - of being 'dishonest and weak'.

"The withdrawal, so to speak, via tweet is of course. sobering and a bit depressing", she said, according to Reuters.

Merkel said she first found out about Trump's decision on the flight back from Canada.

Disagreement over the sunset clause was the deal breaker that scuttled a possible meeting between Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Washington late last month in an attempt to bring the NAFTA talks to a conclusion.

"We need Russian Federation for disarmament talks" and for discussions about both Ukraine and Syria, Merkel said.

The French president's office said in a statement: "International co-operation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks".

"He was even willing to sign that socialist communique", Navarro said, referring to the joint statement of G7 nations that Trump ultimately refused to sign, and which was reportedly the result of hard-line American demands.

Trudeau told reporters that Canada would move forward on July 1 with retaliatory tariffs to answer for Trump's tariffs on aluminum and steel that were "unjustly applied to us".

Her comments came amid an escalating fallout from a contentious meeting between Trump and other world leaders at the Group of Seven (G-7) Summit in Canada over the weekend.

Merkel responded to the tweet on Sunday, saying: "I don't think that inflammatory language makes things better".

President Trump departed the summit early, skipping out on a meeting to discuss climate change.

Trump negotiated in good faith on the communique agreed by the other members of the G7, only to have Trudeau criticize USA policy after he left, Kudlow said. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!

Soon afterwards, Trump rejected in a series of angry tweets from Air Force One the text of a G7 consensus statement - traditionally a paean to shared Western values and objectives under American leadership.

Trump said he doesn't blame the current leaders, but he had a sharp warning for them if they don't work with him to correct what he sees as an unfair situation. Canadians, he said, "will not be pushed around". Trump imposed tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports and 10 percent on imported aluminum from the European Union on June 1, a move he said was meant to protect US national security.
