How Vettel and Ferrari turned 'disaster' into triumph - F1

  • Red Bull Racing driver Daniel Ricciardo of Australia takes a turn at the Senna corner ahead of Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain during the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix auto race in Montreal Sunday

The Austrian said he felt disappointed at seeing Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari winning to regain the lead of the world drivers' championship on a circuit that has in recent years been triumphant Mercedes territory.

The German led every lap of the race to take maximum points in Montreal, finishing well clear of Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen.

It was also Vettel's second win in Canada where he won in 2013 for Red Bull.

"Yeah I'm fine", Hartley told his team.

"It kept dropping and coming back and dropping again".

Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton believes Ferrari will "falter" in the Formula One championship battle.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was sixth, and said it had been a boring race, with Renault's Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz seventh and eighth.

Having avoided the pink-banded tyres like Superman would avoid Kryptonite, Hamilton now rues the policy. Ferrari were out-foxed on strategy in Shanghai and Vettel made an error in Baku, but there was never any danger of that happening in Montreal.

The pair were eliminated in Q1, along with Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly and Williams duo Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin.

"It is very hard to see a trend from circuit to circuit, and the race results are being decided by tight margins".

The race was deservedly Vettel's. Last year's victor in Monaco was Hamilton.

With eight laps to go, his engineer gave him the option of turning the engine down and settling for fifth, but Hamilton insisted he keep trying. Six cars can win races.

Vettel, for whom this was a 50th victory, said: "Perfect is a good way to describe it".

"The chequered flag was shown a lap early because there was a miscommunication between the start platform and the guy that they call the starter, the guy that starts and finishes the races", he said. "There wasn't a moment in the race where we were scared".

With a new engine upgrade fitted to Vettel's auto this weekend, Ferrari was expected to be one of the favourites in Canada but Vettel was not happy with his performance after he was restricted to just 17 laps in second practice due to vehicle issues at the start of the session.

He said the win was special because it came 40 years after Canadian Gilles Villeneuve had won his first race for Ferrari.

Fernando Alonso's F1 future remains unclear after he retired from his 300th Grand Prix before making his Le Mans debut this week.

But he retired with 30 laps to go with a broken exhaust, his second retirement in a row.

It was a dismal race for McLaren, their worst performance of the season and raised concerns their claims of making progress with the vehicle are not coming to fruition.

Mercedes, whose race pace looked the strongest of all on Friday, could not compete.
