Trump says he has clear objective for North Korea summit

At 10am, North Korean vice-minister for foreign affairs, Choi Sun-hee, strode into the Ritz Carlton with her small team. Trump said on June 1 that "We're not going to go in and sign something on June 12 and we never will", noting that the summit was about "start [ing] a process".

Menendez spoke Sunday on ABC's "This Week" as President Donald Trump arrived in Singapore ahead of Tuesday's talks with Kim. The official was not authorized to comment publicly about on internal deliberations and requested anonymity.

USA allies are anxious that Trump could upend decades of worldwide precedent, NPR's Mara Liasson reported on Weekend Edition Sunday.

During the media interview, Mr Lee said that Singapore had committed a lot of resources to the summit's logistics and security because of the profile of the meeting and the nature of what is being discussed.

Our Kim Hyo-sun tells us more.

The news report also showed his arrival in Singapore, where he was greeted by Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, as well as stills of his convoy's journey to St Regis hotel, where he is staying for the summit.

"The entire world is focusing on the historic summit between the DPRK (North Korea) and the USA, and thanks to your honest efforts".

The summit between Kim and Trump will cap a remarkable turnaround in relations between two men who were trading furious insults less than six months ago.

More news: Republican House Speaker says Trump shouldn't pardon himself

"He would be there, he would be running his country, his country would be very rich", Trump said in May, noting that Libya "was a much different model" and not applicable in this case. The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Three planes took off in North Korea at about an hour's interval on Sunday - an IL-76, an Air China Boeing 747 and an ancient Ilyushin IL62 - leaving watchers in the dark about which one Kim was on.

"I'm asking every Democrat who wrote that letter and all my Republican colleagues to tell North Korea and China that if diplomacy fails, we will have the president's back, we'll authorize the use of military force as a last resort to stop the nuclear threat in North Korea to the American homeland and the world at-large".

"If a breakthrough is achieved, if peace comes, there will be a bountiful harvest, primarily of course within the Korean Peninsula but indeed for all the rest of us", he said.

The high-anticipated talks had been put at risk, when, on May 24, Trump announced he was canceling the meeting with Kim over Pyongyang's hostile rhetoric. Sung Kim held an initial round of meetings with the North earlier Monday.

But the South's Winter Olympics in February were the catalyst for a flurry of diplomatic moves as South Korea's dovish leader Moon Jae-in sought to bring the two sides together.

It's not just the logistics of Kim's trip that are unclear.

Pyongyang has said it is willing to deal away its entire nuclear arsenal if the United States provides it with reliable security assurances and other benefits. But many, if not all analysts, say that this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Kim to build his program and that the weapons are seen as the only protection he has.
