Apple bans developers from submitting cryptocurrency mining apps for iOS devices

  • Apple Updates App Store Guidelines, Tightens Rules for Crypto-Related Apps

In a separate clause on designing power efficient apps, the company said that "apps should not rapidly drain battery, generate excessive heat, or put unnecessary strain on device resources", adding that they "may not run unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining".

During its recent Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple quietly slipped some language into the App Store review guidelines that prevent anyone from using iPhones and iPads to mine cryptocurrency.

In March 2018, 9to5Macreported that Apple pulled a calendar app from its App Store for violating the efficient power guidelines.

The new language covers both types of cryptocurrency mining, active and passive, while ensuring Apple users aren't experiencing any performance drain from either.

In a policy section dedicated to cryptocurrencies - such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Monero (XMR), Apple says that apps may facilitate wallet storage and transactions on approved exchanges. Though there are multiple changes to the guidelines concerning this issue, the company seems to be putting a special focus on cracking down on apps used for cryptocurrency mining.

You can no longer use your iPhone for mining bitcoins - or not through Apple's official channels, at least.

As bitcoin prices peaked near $20,000 in December 2017, Apple unveiled a new section of guidelines specific to cryptocurrencies and ICOs on December 20. These conditions extend to apps providing cryptocurrency futures trading, and other crypto-securities or quasi-securities trading. This could give Apple grounds to remove the Onavo app, although the software is still available despite the rules kicking in last week. It also insisted that apps involved in Initial Coin Offerings, cryptocurrency futures trading and the like had to come from established banks, securities firms, futures commissions merchants or other approved financial institutions.

If you haven't worked it out yet, this news is very good news and will see some brand-new cryptocurrency-based applications go live on the App Store.

And apps won't be allowed to offer cryptocurrency in exchange for letting them complete other tasks such as downloading additional apps or posting on social networks.
