Domino's giving select cities pothole fix money to keep pizzas safe

  • Domino's Pizza is now also specializing in... potholes

The tongue-in-cheek approach to promoting the ease of carryout follows Domino's announcement earlier this year that it would provide free insurance for carryout pizza, remaking it for free if anything should happen to it.

"Potholes, cracks, and bumps in the road can cause irreversible damage to your pizza during the drive home from Domino's", the Paving for Pizza website reads. Images provided by Domino's show a pothole fix truck emblazoned with the chain's logo and the slogan, "Bad roads shouldn't happen to good pizza".

Domino's Pizza has added a new item to its menu: pothole repairs.

And no, they're not kidding, they really are filling in potholes, although not at random, as towns need to be nominated on the Paving For Pizza website. In Petaluma, Calif., a town that applied for and won KFC pothole funding based on the city's "dual reputation for chicken farming and tire-flattening potholes", the local government ended up in a fracas with PETA over the collaboration with KFC. A spokesperson called it "an extremely isolated incident, confined to a single store". The loose connection between roads and pizza delivery is just enough to give Domino's justification to engage in a major campaign to demonstrate the company's social conscience. At a restaurant in Johnson City, health inspectors discovered rodent droppings on 14 trays of pizza dough.

Domino's announced it had already worked to fix roads in Burbank, Calif.; Bartonville, Texas; Milford, Del.; and Athens, Ga.

What's your take on Domino's commitment?

So is it something that Domino's is planning here?

"While it's not something we are actively looking at the moment, at Domino's we never say never", says Scott Bush, general manager of Domino's New Zealand.

So no pothole repairs for us, but at least we get those sweet puns.
