A South Korean senior presidential official on Tuesday said Seoul believed the "greatest achievement" of today's DPRK-U.S. summit was the two leaders developing confidence in each other as partners.

"Plus, I think it's very provocative", he noted, adding that "at some point" he wanted to withdraw USA troops from the South.

It was signed by Trump and Kim shortly after they met privately and with their respective administrations, with the paperwork stipulating that Kim has 'reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula'.

North Korea is now under both global and unilateral U.S. sanctions for its nuclear and missiles tests.

"So far, the Korean peninsula issues are developing mostly in the direction China is hoping for - and after the Kim-Trump summit in Singapore, China's role will definitely be bigger".

The two leaders concluded their Tuesday meeting by signing an agreement that acknowledges progress in their talks.

While Washington has maintained that Pyongyang should achieve complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization (CVID) this was not included in the joint agreement between leaders at the summit.

Sputnik discussed the first ever summit between an incumbent United States president and a North Korean leader with Charles Armstrong, a historian and professor of Korean Studies at Columbia University.

"We've adhered to the position of considering [the halt] during the process of dialogue even in the past", he added, asking the outlets to refer to a previous statement from the Blue House.

Geng said Beijing would continue to fulfil its worldwide obligations and play a constructive role on the Korean peninsula.

"I was a little concerned that the president would give away our issue with regard to military exercises without getting something in return".

Mintaro Oba, a former US State Department diplomat specialising in the Koreas, said the summit was more about style and symbolism.

So, this is just the beginning of what is going to be a long and complicated road with many detours and bumps, no doubt and we will see what happens as it is going forward.

The US president meanwhile told reporters after the summit that he would suspend war games with South Korea, which he described as "expensive" and "provocative".
