The fire was reported Tuesday near the town of Silverthorne in Summit County, which is home to several ski resorts.

Meanwhile, additional firefighters were headed to Wyoming to work on a wildfire that has exploded in size and prompted evacuations near the Colorado border.

Crews battled a fire near Silverthorne, known as the Buffalo Mountain Fire Tuesday afternoon.

Though the fire is expected to continue burning until then, it doesn't mean the Type I team will manage the fire the entirety of the time, or that people will be out of their homes for that long, spokeswoman Jamie Knight said.

About 1,900 homes have been evacuated since the fire began June 1, though 560 homes were declared safe late Wednesday, allowing some residents to return.

Some 2,150 dwellings remained under evacuation orders and residents of another 500 homes were advised they, too, might have to flee at a moment's notice, La Plata County officials said.

"We really just want to go home". Fire spokesman Brian Eady told the Associated Press that the increase noted over the weekend was the result of both the fire's natural growth and intentional blazes sparked by firefighters in an effort to control its movement.

The Badger Creek Fire grew rapidly Monday because of strong winds and dry conditions and had scorched about 3.6 square miles (9.3 square kilometers) of mostly beetle-killed forest.

The west side of the 416 Fire is burning at over 8,000 feet in terrain that is hard for ground resources. Incident Commander Todd Pechota said he plans to bring in more crews to replace outgoing firefighters.

San Juan National Forest Supervisor, Kara Chadwick, wants concerned citizens to know that instituting a forest closure is an extremely hard decision, and she is aware that the closure will affect a great many people, businesses, partner agencies, forest management activities, and the public.

Fires in New Mexico have also caused Forest Service authorities to close the Santa Fe National Forest and Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands.

Farther south, northeast of Albuquerque, extreme fire danger is also forcing parts of the Cibola National Forest to close to the public starting on Friday, New Mexico fire officials said. It is 15 percent contained. This year, almost 24,000 wildfires have burned more than 1.7 million acres across the country.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The fire has not destroyed any homes.
