Trump quip about North Korea's Kim sparks outcry on social media

  • Putin invites Kim to Russia, praises Trump summit

This is the beginning of the process toward the denuclearisation of North Korea.

Eliot Cohen, a Trump critic and former senior State Department official under George W. Bush, said Trump "has classic traits of the authoritarian leader". They told reporters they were able to confirm that the email was read, and were anxiously awaiting a reply.

Following his meetings with Kim, Trump told ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos in an interview Tuesday that he has suggested ending the war games, calling them "very provocative".

Of course, Kim also had the advantage of his father's police state to kill his half-brother, his uncle and other potential opponents. It was an unprecedented encounter that saw the leader of the world's most powerful democracy shake hands with the third-generation scion of a dynastic dictatorship. "It is simply unbelievable that Trump flew all the way to Singapore to end up with the short end of the stick". And I can think of two broad theories to answer that question.

The liberal Hankyoreh newspaper struck a much more upbeat note, saying Trump and Kim "opened the door to a new era ... by taking their first step on the road to peace, a road that has never been taken before".

Trump said he could also invite Kim to the White House. "That's what gets you nuclear war", he said at a conference in early May. "If there's a chance at peace, if there's a chance to end the frightful threat of nuclear conflict, then we must pursue it at all costs", he said. He said cancellation of the drills "is really a bad idea ... and (Trump) betrayed our people". He noted that he gave Kim "a very direct number" and instructed him to "call me if he has any difficulties". I can call him.

No matter. That's what Trump is heading for, and by the time he gets there he will undoubtedly think that it was his goal all along.

Amy Zegart, director of the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University, said Trump's embrace of authoritarians "is a jagged and risky departure" in American foreign policy. On the other hand, China can achieve what Xi Jinping told former U.S. president Barack Obama that the Pacific Ocean is wide enough to accommodate both China and the US.

The South Korean expert saw Trump's comments as a meaning of delaying the South Korea-U.S. joint military drills as long as dialogue continues between Pyongyang and Washington.

Trump went on to praise the "great chemistry" he had with Kim and listed what he considered to be his administration's accomplishments in containing the North Korean regime. "When Trump realised there wasn't going to be anything substantial in return, it was impossible for him to back out because he had already gone too far". "If you can do that at 27 years old, I mean, that's 1 in 10,000 that could do that".

Despite uncertainties, Trump talked up the outcome of what was the first meeting between a USA and North Korean leader in six decades of hostility. "He saluted me and I saluted him back".

USA and South Korean forces have trained together for decades, and routinely rehearse everything from beach landings in the North to pre-emptive "decapitation" strikes targeting the North Korean regime.
