  • Nets trading for Dwight Howard in NBA stunner

It appears Howard - a surefire Hall of Famer - has worn out his welcome in another locker room.

In a shocking reveal Wednesday morning, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that a trade involving Howard to the Nets is being finalized.

After spending the first eight seasons of his career in Orlando, Howard has played for the Lakers (2012-13), the Houston Rockets (2013-16), the Hawks (2016-17), the Hornets (2017-18) and, now, the Nets.

Howard's value has clearly declined if the best the Hornets can get for him from the Nets is Mozgov and two future second-round picks. Howard makes $23.8 million next season on an expiring contract. They will save some $17 million on the trade in the 2019-20 season. He averaged 16.6 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks in 30.4 minutes per game, and shot 55.5 percent from the floor.

Howard went to Charlotte and declared himself team leader - despite the presence of Walker, the franchise player.

Mozgov, on the other hand, has two years, $32.7 million left on his contract. He then spent one year with the Atlanta Hawks and one with the Hornets. At this point, that it what it is and Howard as a player is what he is - an aging former superstar who has enough game to still be a productive piece. The deal cannot be made official until the league lifts its moratorium on July 6.

The 7-foot-1 Mozgov has not played a full 82-game season since 2013 and has averaged in double figures only once during his eight-year National Basketball Association career.

With the trade, the Hornets have opened up two max-salary slots for 2019 offseason.
