  • The Story Behind the Viral Photo of a Crying Child at the Border

Magazine is making a statement with their new issue which has President Donald Trump towering over a crying child.

As anger continues to mount against the horrifying child separation policies of the Trump administration, Time magazine has created a cover that many say perfectly encapsulates the situation.

Time released a cover image of its July 2 issue, which features Mr Trump looming over a sobbing child, who is the subject of a now-iconic photograph taken by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer John Moore. TIME's editors said they chose the image because it was so powerful.

"As soon as it was over, they were put into a van", he told the magazine. This is the story of how he found a little girl and her mother beside the Rio Grande last week and took what could be one of the most high-impact photos of his career. He took it during a ride-along with a Customs and Border Patrol agent on June 12. Sanchez had told her husband that she hoped to go the U.S.to seek a better life for her children, away from the dangers of their home country. "I fear they were split up". "But I couldn't", he said. Moore further said that he really wanted to "pick the girl up" at that moment but he couldn't. "It's a very different scene now", he said, comparing his experiences photographing families at the border now and before Trump's new policy.

But a vote on a "compromise" bill between the party's hard-right and moderate wings, which ends family separations but also includes Trump priorities like curtailing legal immigration and providing some protections to young immigrants, was pushed back to at least Friday - a clear sign it lacked the votes to pass. The Associated Press quoted the Border Patrol as saying that close to 200 people inside the facility were minors, unaccompanied by a parent. The striking use of these two images together exemplifies the debate around immigration, family separation, and the "zero tolerance" policy, which the Trump administration instituted in early May. And the separation from their parents is traumatic enough to be likened to torture.
