Suarez brings up century of Uruguay caps

  • The Saudi Arabia national team arriving in Rostov on Don for their FIFA World Cup 2018 match

Luis Suarez has become the first Uruguayan player to score in three different editions of the World Cup (2010, 2014 & 2018).

At least Suarez, who missed three sitters in Uruguay's 1-0 opening win against Egypt, was his vintage efficient self with his 52nd global goal although he will not have dismissed fears he was not 100 percent fit.

The stadium burst into life in the 23rd minute however, when an unmarked Suarez coolly tapped into an empty net from a corner kick after keeper Al-Owais came out but misjudged his jump and couldn't reach the ball. They were more functional than exhilarating and reliant upon the threat carried by Barcelona's Suarez and strike partner Edinson Cavani.

With Juan Antonio Pizzi's men unable to create a clear chance, Saudi Arabia are without a win in 12 World Cup matches and in danger of finishing bottom of their group.

Saudi Arabia have endured the toughest start to the tournament of any side, as the unexpected thrashing at the hands of the relatively unfancied hosts was followed by a minor mid-air emergency during an internal flight from their training base near St Petersburg, as they prepare for a daunting assignment against Uruguay.

The result, though, had a domino effect in Group A. It also put host Russian Federation into the next round while eliminating both Saudi Arabia and Egypt at the same time.

Uruguay dominated proceedings in the early stages of the match as they went in search of goal to settle the nerves.

Saudi Arabia have conceded 14 headed goals at the World Cup and it could have been 15, Martin Caceres heading over in the 68th minute from another Sanchez delivery.

One goal against Saudi Arabia will not be enough to convince the naysayers that Suarez is ready to lead his country to glory, but it should serve as a timely reminder of his ability. However, Saudi Arabia bounced back with a much better effort than what we saw in its opener and made things very hard on the South American side.

When is FIFA World Cup 2018 Uruguay v/s Saudia Arabia match? "We have to prove we are at the same level of quality as they are".

Saudi Arabia won 53-percent possession versus Uruguay but finished with only three shots on target and eight shots in total.

"They've got a lot of good players with a lot of experience, and for a lot of them it could be their last chance at a World Cup".
