  • India gears up to celebrate International Yoga Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led close to 50,000 people today in Dehradun to mark the fourth International Yoga Day.

The idea of International Day of Yoga was first proposed by Prime Minister Modi during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 27 September 2014. Yoga also enhances the communication level among people, he added. The Minister said, Yoga is the indicator of human index too. If we take up yoga everyday, we will be calm, peaceful and spiritual. "It has become a powerful unifying force", he said.

Addressing a large gathering with the British-era Friday building against the backdrop, Modi said yoga has shown the world the way from "illness to wellness" and enriching lives across the globe. The Bharathidasan University observed the day with training sessions on yoga and meditation.

The 4th International Yoga Day was celebrated at the Rashtrapati Bhavan with a yoga demonstration. Yoga increases the flexibility of the body, makes it toned and supple, and also helps maintain a good body weight.

Even at the World Economic Forum in Davos early this year, Modi took a team of yoga experts who conducted meditative and sweat-out sessions for top company leaders from all over the world. Teachers from India are said to be travelling across the world making yoga universal.

"In a world where non-communicable diseases, stress and lifestyle-related ailments are rising, yoga can play a central role in mitigating these diseases to create a healthy mind and body". AP Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu participated in a special yoga event in Vijayawada.

In another event held organized by the Indian Embassy on June 19, 2018 hundreds of people including representatives from, Yoga associations, officials from the embassy, film personalities like Malina Joshi (also Miss Nepal 2011), friendship societies and school children participated in the camp enthusiastically. "The mountains around here inspire people to do yoga".

Modi is keen on portraying his physical prowess, last week posting on Twitter his morning yoga routine involving plodding around a tree and flexing over a boulder.
