  • Kim Jong-un attending a military parade to mark the 70th anniversary of the Korean People's Army

And on Sunday, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said he is hopeful North Korea would soon return the remains of U.S. service members killed during the Korean War.

The rally, which typically marks the start of a month of events commemorating the 1950-53 Korean war and denouncing the U.S., has been held for years and last year attracted 100,000 people in the capital, Pyongyang.

News reports are also addressing President Trump differently, calling him by his title and full name instead of just his last name which is how USA officials are traditionally referenced by the regime's media.

South Korea began a process Monday to select those who will meet their long-separated family members in North Korea in late August.

"I am not going to put a timeline on it, whether that's two months, six months, we are committed to moving forward in an expeditious moment to see if we can achieve what both leaders set out to do", Pompeo said.

But while both work to achieve the vague language of Kim's promise to "completely denuclearise the Korean peninsula", America's top USA diplomat refused to put a timeline on negotiations with North Korea contradicting a senior defence official who said Washington would soon present a timeline to North Korea with "specific asks".

North Korean state media have shown many reports, photographs and videos of the recent meeting between the country's leader and the US president.

"We'll know pretty soon if they're going to operate in good faith or not", the anonymous official said, as recounted by Reuters.

North Korea has also tried to withhold its participation in family reunions until certain political conditions are met, such as halting activists in the South from sending outside information into the North.

Also, North and South Korean officials met last week over the issue of families separated by the Korean War.

"There always will be challenges and there is work to do, but none of this could have happened without the commitment of the two senior leaders", Pompeo said, "and so long as that commitment stays in place, the United States is prepared to do exactly what the president said, which is create a brighter future for North Korea and provide security assurances for the North Korean people".

The day after the Singapore summit Pompeo said Washington hoped to achieve "major disarmament" by North Korea within Trump's current term, which ends on 20 January 2021.

North Korea will continue to ignore Japan unless Tokyo halts hostilities against its neighbor, such as large-scale military drills and efforts to boost military readiness, the isolated nation's state media has said. He also reaffirmed his pledge to give up nuclear arms, and the U.S. on Friday said it would halt some joint military drills on the peninsula over the next three months in support of diplomacy.
