Prince William followed in his wife Kate Middleton's footsteps during his royal tour of the Middle East.

Britain's Prince William voiced horror over a Nazi death camp exhibit at Israel's Holocaust memorial in a sombre start on Tuesday to the first official British royal visit to Israel and the Palestinian Territories.

Accompanied by Britain's chief rabbi, he will lay a wreath in its Hall of Remembrance and meet two Holocaust survivors who were given refuge in Britain as children. The princess died in 1969, and in 1988 her remains were brought to Jerusalem.

Britain has since taken a back seat to the United States in mediating peace efforts, and the royal family has mostly steered clear of the region's toxic politics.

William, a 36-year-old grandson of Queen Elizabeth and second in line to the throne, will see religious sites, honor Holocaust victims and meet Jewish and Arab youths, and Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

She said Israeli and Palestinian officials had pointed out to her it was a highly politicised place so people would be scrutinising his every step and every comment.

The Prince will then conclude his trip to Israel by meeting young Israelis at Beit Ha'ir Museum before leaving for Ramallah in the West Bank to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

In a statement to launch the trip Kensington Palace had said a day "in the Occupied Palestinian Territories will begin with a short briefing on the history and geography of Jerusalem's Old City from a viewing point at the Mount of Olives". "And he really wants to get under the skin of the country", Quarrey added.

Ambassador Quarrey insisted the wording merely reflected decades of terminology used by British governments.

The picture of the future royal with her father and sister was released by the Middleton family ahead of Prince William's wedding to Catherine in April 2011.

"It is important to emphasis that the Duke is not a political figure, this is not a political visit", he said. He was hosted by Crown Prince Hussein, 23, a member of the Hashemite dynasty Britain helped install in then-Transjordan nearly a century ago.

William, an avid soccer fan, arrived in Jordan on Sunday afternoon, as the England-Panama World Cup match was underway. According to Hello! during a reception at the British ambassador to Jordan's residence in the capital of Amman, Rania Malki, chief executive of Save The Children in Jordan, told Prince William that she knew the house that the Middleton family had lived in, as it's now the home of her children's paediatrician.
