Apple is planning to release higher-end AirPods, studio-quality over-the-ear headphones, and a new HomePodsmart speaker in 2019. Rather than utilizing Beats branding, these new headphones will feature the Apple name, and should be released in 2019.
The company has internally discussed adding biometric sensors to future AirPods, such as a heart-rate monitor, to expand its health-related hardware offerings beyond the Apple Watch, they said.
You've probably seen people walking around with Apple's AirPods sticking our of their ears and wondered how someone doesn't just lose the wireless earbuds. Apple also wants to ensure that these new AirPods can work even when relatively far away from their companion smartphone or tablet.
When Apple launched AirPods in 2016, the earbuds went on sale with limited supply following a delay. However, users won't be able to swim wearing them.
Apple is also said to be working on a pair of over-the-ear headphones. Given all of these new features, it's very likely for the pair of new earbuds to cost more than the current $159 model. However, production hasn't started, and design and technology partnerships for the product haven't been finalized. Apple had originally meant to introduce the headphones by the end of 2018 but has faced development challenges. According to previous rumors, Apple was working on over-the-ear headphones for music loves, but with the new AirPods coming up next year, the new lineup of full-sized headsets is likely to be delayed.
The wireless AirPods are an improvement over the previously popular Apple EarPods which were wired and offered a similar sound signature with crisp audio.
A new version of the HomePod speaker is also under development, sources say. They'll utilize Apple branding and be positioned as a higher-end alternative to the company's Beats line.
Apple did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Two years later, Apple bought headphone maker and streaming-music company Beats for $3 billion, its largest acquisition.
