Serena Williams seeded for Wimbledon

  • Serena Williams is a seven-times champion at Wimbledon

Serena Williams will be seeded No. 25 at Wimbledon for this year's Grand Slam event in London, it was announced Wednesday.

One effect of Williams' being seeded at the All England Club: The 32nd-ranked Dominika Cibulkova, a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist and the 2014 Australian Open runner-up, will not benefit from a seeding and could play anyone in the field in the first round. I think it's just not fair.

The All England Club usually follows the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, but it does have the right to make alterations in the interest of producing a "balanced draw".

The 36-year-old American is continuing her return to action after giving birth to her first child, Olympia, in September 2017. "I don't think it's the right thing to do", Cibulkova told BBC before the ruling.

In the men's draw, the champion, Roger Federer, is seeded No1, despite losing the top spot in the world rankings to Rafael Nadal at the beginning of the week.

For Wimbledon, seedings generally had followed the WTA world rankings, which protects players who have been out due to injury but not those absent due to pregnancy. "I have tried and I should be seeded". Williams had said before the ruling that the idea of the sport changing the way maternity leave is treated is bigger than her.

Unless a seed withdraws before the start of the tournament, Cibulkova could potentially face Halep or even Williams in the first round. She pulled out of that tournament in the fourth round because of an injury.

"I think if it was a different player, not her, I think she would not be seeded".

No unseeded woman has won the Wimbledon singles championship.

The draw for Wimbledon is Friday; play begins Monday.

Last weekend, U.S. Open President and CEO Katrina Adams said that it would definitely seed Williams for the season's final major, acknowledging that the formula for doing so had yet to be determined. "Maybe not in time for me, but for the next person", she said.

"She [Serena Williams] is the greatest player to ever play the sport", Wozniacki told reporters during a grass-court tune-up earlier this week.
