Judge Nap: Michael Cohen's ABC Interview Should Cause Trump 'Sleepless Nights'

  • Porn star Stormy Daniels was supposed to meet with prosecutors last Monday in reference to the investigation into Cohen but the meeting was abruptly cancelled

Michael Cohen, once steadfast in his role of protecting President Donald Trump from a barrage of legal issues as the president's personal lawyer, told ABC News in an interview released Monday that he now puts "family and country first".

In April, Mr Trump blamed news outlets for trying to destroy his relationship with Mr Cohen, tweeting that he did not think he would "flip" allegiances.

Prosecutors in the case are likely to scrutinize Cohen's admission to setting up a limited liability company in 2016 to pay adult film star Stormy Daniels, who alleges she had an affair with Trump more than a decade ago and that she was paid to keep quiet about it.

"I will not be a punching bag as part of anyone's defense strategy", he said emphatically.

As the ABC report noted, Cohen's team at McDermott was in a joint defense agreement with Trump's legal team, led by Joanna Hendon of Spears Imes, allowing them to share information and documents with each other.

Asked whether Trump had prior knowledge of both events, Cohen demurred, saying that he couldn't comment on advice of his counsel.

He added: "Once I understand what charges might be filed against me, if any at all, I will defer to my counsel, to my new counsel Guy Petrillo for guidance on future responses".

Trump said last month that he hasn't spoken to Cohen in "a long time" and that he was "not my lawyer anymore". The raid, he added, "was obviously upsetting to me and my family".

The declaration was a far cry from earlier statements made by Cohen.

Cohen said he hopes the interview would be a firs step in achieving a "resolution".

Robert Mintz, a former federal prosecutor now in private practice, said that Cohen "has sent every signal he possibly can to prosecutors that he will put his own interests first and will jump at any deal that may save him from going to jail".

Mueller's team has not yet interviewed Cohen, but he said he has provided the team with documents and said he'll fully cooperate, noting he testified before House and Senate committees investigating Russian involvement with the 2016 election.

"I can't imagine his lawyers would want him to do so.

One day I will answer", Cohen said when asked about the payment and if Trump knew.

US President Donald Trump boards Air Force One before departing from Morristown Municipal Airport in Morristown, New Jersey, on July 1, 2018, following a weekend in Bedminster, New Jersey.

"Simply accepting the denial of Mr. Putin is unsustainable", Cohen said.

Stephanopoulos said he asked Cohen if he had any regrets about how he has handled any of the matters under investigation. "I would not do or say anything that might be perceived as interfering with their professional review of the evidence and the facts".

Cohen told Stephanopoulos, when asked if he had any regrets, that he "tried to make good faith judgments in the past", but acknowledged that he's not ideal. I also acknowledge that I am not flawless.

"I believe it was a mistake by those from the Trump campaign who did participate", Mr Cohen said.
