Toronto Public Health, meanwhile, has extended its heat warning for the city. That rain may turn into a full-out thunderstorm, so plan your outdoor activities accordingly.

"A cold front is going to come Thursday night, and that will drop our temperatures back to more normal ones, especially for this weekend", says Cheng.

Nighttime will offer some relief each day with temperatures hovering around 20 C. The humidity will stick around though.

The extreme heat event will continue through Thursday.

The overnight lows are expected to be in the low 20s but with the humidity sticking around, there won't be much relief from the heat.

The number of deaths being attributed to an intense heat wave in Quebec has climbed to 15, prompting public-health officials to warn those at risk to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness.

An extended heat warning issued by the city's medical officer of health on Sunday remains in effect.

Canada Day was supposed to start out sunny in the morning, turning to a mix of sun and cloud in the afternoon, with a 30 per cent chance of showers. Temperatures near the lake shores will be cooler.

Drouin says the victims fit the profile of people authorities describe as at risk: those with chronic illness or mental-health problems, people who live alone and people without air conditioning at home.

To prevent heat stress during a heat alert, Dr. Strang suggests to stay in a shaded, cool or air-conditioned area, drink plenty of water, wear light-coloured clothing and to not leave anyone or any animal unattended in vehicles.
