Will Amy Coney Barrett be Trump's Supreme Court pick?

Republican Senator Susan Collins is being sent coat hangers in the mail by abortion rights activists keen to encourage her to vote down any Supreme Court nominees who would threaten Roe v. Wade.

President Trump is on the verge of announcing a nominee to the Supreme Court who undoubtedly will be given the seal of approval by right-leaning groups dedicated to reversing Roe v. Wade. The 1973 ruling legalized abortion across America. Coney Barrett, who sits on the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Chicago, is just 46 and would give Trump an opportunity to leave a long-lasting imprint on the court.

Trump said he was working from a list of 25 conservative nominees the White House released last November, and the Center has requested disclosures for all of them.

But in this leak-prone White House, the President's choice will be guarded as closely as a wartime command. Also included on the short list is reportedly Senator Lee's brother, Utah Supreme Court Justice Thomas Lee.

While it is true that "the numbers provide grist for Democrats to make an effort to derail a Trump Supreme Court pick", if Trump chooses one of the Federalist Society-approved picks, the polling data provides a political lesson even after a new nominee is confirmed.

Shortly after he was elected in 2016, in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes", Trump said "I'm pro-life".

Collins added on Wednesday that if a nominee is very strongly for Roe v. Wade "but lacks the qualification, the experience, the integrity, [or] has ethical issues in the background", she would not vote for him or her. Though McCain has often defied Trump, he has been absent from Congress all year as he undergoes treatment for an aggressive brain cancer. "I also suggested that he broaden his search". Last week she also described Roe as "settled law" to CBS, declining to say whether she would protect the law by voting against a judge who aims to overturn it. They were the only Democrats to do so.

"There is no ambivalence on abortion as men and women dig in and say, 'Hands off Roe v. Wade, '" said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll.

Kennedy is a conservative but has at times sided with the liberals on the court in key decisions, including decisions on the death penalty, abortion, and same-sex marriage.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham told NBC's "Meet the Press" show he would not vote for a nominee who has made up their mind about specific cases, including Roe v Wade. "It's clearly precedent, and I always look for judges who respect precedent". Though the court said park rangers had violated his free speech rights, the case was not about the right to abortion itself.

Trump said in an interview with Maria Bartiromo on Fox's "Sunday Morning Futures" program that the abortion issue could end up being decided at the state level.

"[Barrett] went to [the University of] Notre Dame. she is very Catholic", Zerlina Maxwell said Monday on MSNBC.
