  • Thai soccer team rescue Former Navy diver dies while exiting flooded caves

Four Thai soccer players are the first to be successfully rescued from a flooded cave hours after a complex and unsafe rescue mission commenced, according to Thai navy SEALS.

A unsafe rescue mission to free 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach trapped inside a Thai cave for two weeks has begun, authorities said.

The 12 boys trapped in a cave in Thailand may have no choice but to make the risky dive that's already claimed the life of a former navy seal.

Complicated rescue: Local government officials said 13 foreign and five Thai divers are taking part in the long and unsafe operation to free the 12 young soccer players and their 25-year-old coach.

He said the 13 are very ready to come out and the rescue team is at "peak readiness" and have been practising for the past three to four days.

A group of 18 divers - 13 foreign and five Thai - began the operation at 10 a.m. Sunday local time to bring the 13 people out of the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai province after the area saw mild weather and falling water levels in the cave.

His visit with relatives and rescue officials last week was criticized by some Thais as opportunistic as his government faced pro-democracy protests in the capital Bangkok in recent months.

After more than two weeks trapped in a dark cave, eight boys and their soccer coach are waiting their turn for the risky escape.

The rescue teams had rehearsed the plan for several days, Mr. Narongsak said, and had managed to drain the water level in the cave considerably, but needed to move fast.

The group of boys along with their 25-year-old coach entered the cave on June 23, but became trapped due to unexpected rising water.

According to the Associated Press, Thai officials said the healthiest boys have been taken out of the cave first.

"There's no time limit on the operation", he said. Osottanakorn said they will resume in 10 to 20 hours because "we've used all the oxygen". The ambulances drove to a nearby helipad and a helicopter was seen taking off.

The announcement of USA government involvement was sudden and this tweet is looked at as Trump's first public comment on the rescue mission.

It is not yet known whether the boys swum out, or if they were sedated and delivered by the rescuers.

It's part of an effort to evacuate the 12 boys from the team along with their coach, in a rescue that has captured the world's attention, with reporters flocking to the scene and foreign divers arriving to assist.

President Donald Trump is praising the rescue efforts underway in Thailand to save a boys soccer team trapped in a cave and touted the help the United States is giving.

Rescuers have been unable to extend a hose pumping oxygen all the way to where the boys are, but have brought them some oxygen tanks.
