  • Samsung makes world's largest mobile factory in Noida

The factory opening attracted some notable guests, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

The new facility, which has been dubbed the "world's largest mobile factory", is located in Sector 81, Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The country's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will visit the site later today to officially inaugurate Samsung's biggest mobile factory.

The new Samsung factory will have the capacity to fabricate 120 million smartphones per year, and make everything from low-end smartphones that cost under $100 to the company's flagship S9 model.

The mobile phone plant can produce almost 12 crore mobile phones every year, and will create 15,000 job opportunities. The new facility is spread across an area of over 140,000 square meters.

Samsung has also faced growing concerns about the health of its mobile business, as the unit continues to see less-than-stellar profit growth.

The foundation stone of the Noida plant was laid by Samsung in 1996.

"Today is an important day in making India a global hub of manufacturing", he said, adding that the investments in such factories are a cornerstone of India's economic and commercial engagements with countries like South Korea. "I hope smartphones produced by this plant are exported to more countries, strengthening cooperation between other countries", Moon said. "2,000 new jobs will be generated in this plant", he said.

Established in 1995, Samsung India laid the foundation stone of Noida plant next year. "It will help them (Samsung) more effectively leverage the R&D that has been going on for a long time now".

As of now, Samsung has two manufacturing units in India: Besides Noida, they have a unit in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu and 5 research and development centres.

Samsung has been enjoying a feast in the smartphone market, especially in India, where it has the tag of highest selling mobile brand, after Xiaomi.

In the smartphone segment, Xiaomi maintained its lead in the first quarter with a record 31% market share followed by Samsung (26%), vivo (6%), OPPO (6%), and Honor (3%).

The Indian mobile phone market grew by 48% YoY in the first quarter of 2018, driven by strong demand from the featurephone segment.

Ahead of the trip to India, Moon and his office emphasized the importance of India in the New Southern Policy on numerous occasions before the trip.
