Who is Supreme Court contender Amy Coney Barrett?

Amid July 8 television talk-show buzz about President Donald Trump's upcoming Supreme Court nominee announcement, Republicans expressed optimism that the Senate will confirm any of the likely candidates the president puts forth.

"Throughout legal circles he's considered a judge's judge, a true thought leader among his peers", Trump, who named conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch to the court previous year, told an applauding audience in the White House East Room.

The letter addresses the controversy surrounding the nomination after McConnell's Senate refused to vote on outgoing President Barack Obama nominee Merrick Garland in 2016 which allowed Trump to instill right-leaning Neil Gorsuch to the high court when he took office.

US President Donald Trump on Monday nominated Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, setting the stage for a tumultuous confirmation battle over the future direction of the nation's highest court. Kavanaugh, who serves on the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, is expected to be less receptive to abortion and gay rights than Kennedy was. The president also has been considering federal appeals court Judges Raymond Kethledge and Thomas Hardiman.

Judge Kavanaugh now faces what could be a hard fight for confirmation by the US Senate, where Republicans hold only a slim majority.

The Democratic senator Kamala Harris of California said: "Judge Brett Kavanaugh represents a direct and fundamental threat to that promise of equality and so I will oppose his nomination to the supreme court". Jon Tester of Montana - told reporters on Monday that he was not invited to the White House for Monday's ceremony, but added he's open to voting to one of the nominees.

That kind of thinking could prove helpful to Trump, who has been dogged by accusations of sexual harassment, as well as possible obstruction of justice in the Russian Federation probe now being led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Kavanaugh's work on the Starr report has been scrutinized by Republicans who have said it could pose trouble for the president as he negotiates with special counsel Robert Mueller over the terms of a possible interview related to Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

In brief remarks, Kavanaugh, 53, described himself as "deeply honoured" and said: "Mr President, throughout this process I have witnessed your appreciation for the vital role of the American judiciary".

Republicans hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, though with ailing Senator John McCain battling cancer in his home state of Arizona they now can muster only 50 votes.

Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia will be prime targets. As a result, Democrats have accused Republicans of stealing a Supreme Court seat. That means President Trump should select anyone but Kethledge or Hardiman.

MCCAMMON: At the same time, as I said, you know, Barrett's very popular with religious conservatives.

Trump's post came on the eve of his second lifetime appointment to the nine-member Supreme Court, one of the more powerful perks of office.

"One Republican senator can decide the fate of any Supreme Court nominee", said Sen. Like Trump's first nominee previous year, Justice Neil Gorsuch, Kavanaugh would be a young addition who could help remake the court for decades to come with rulings that could restrict abortion, expand gun rights and roll back key parts of Obamacare. They'll target three Democratic senators who voted for Gorsuch and who are running for re-election in states that Pres. Trump won.

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer called Trump recently to warn it would be "cataclysmic" for national unity if he nominated someone hostile to Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that protects women's rights to abortion, according to a person familiar with the discussion.
