  • A curious soccer team a flooded Thai cave and a perilous trek to safety

A video from the Thai Navy SEAL Facebook page showed the group several kilometers inside the 10-kilometer (6-mile) cave network on a small wedge of dry ground. To get a sense of the overwhelming global interest in the effort, the post attracted tens of thousands of likes and more than 10,000 comments within an hour.

The Wild Boars and their coach became trapped on June 23 when they set out to explore the vast cave complex after soccer practice, when a rainy season downpour flooded the tunnels.

Rescuers have been working to lower the water level in the cave to prepare for an hours-long mission to retrieve the boys, ages 11 to 16, most of whom can't swim.

Four boys completed the hazardous escape yesterday and are receiving medical treatment, say rescue officials.

Bursts of heavy monsoon rain soaked the Tham Luang Cave area in northern Chiang Rai province on Sunday and storms were expected in coming weeks, increasing the risks in what has been called a "war with water and time" to save the team.

"Six of them came out", a defence ministry official, who asked not to be named, told AFP.

Expert divers entered the sprawling complex for the complicated and unsafe mission.

Narongsak said each boy was outfitted in a full scuba face mask and was escorted by two seasoned divers.

Initial euphoria over finding the boys alive quickly turned into deep anxiety as rescuers struggled to find a way to get them out.

The names of the four boys rescued from the caves last night have not been officially confirmed.

Narongsak said rescuers had to tighten a guide rope as part of their preparations for Monday's operation.

The fellow classmates and teachers from the same school have described to the press the preparations they have made for the boys.

According to a report in NDTV, there is a possibility that the heavy rainfall can flood the cave complex in mountainous northern Thailand, which has been also emerged as one of the enemies during the rescue operation.

Narongsak said that the "same multinational team" that went into the cave on Sunday to retrieve the first four boys was deployed on Monday.

One former Navy Seal died trying to help rescue 12 boys and their coach who have been trapped in a cave for almost two weeks - highlighting the inherent risks in attempting to move the boys, who are physically weak after days without food and dwindling oxygen supplies.

"Today is D-Day", Narongsak had earlier told reporters.

"As all of us said, the main thing is we still need more than 20 hours to get ready", Narongsak said.

"To all the parents, all the kids are still fine". That along with dwindling oxygen levels, added to the urgency of getting the team out.

The only way to extract them is by navigating 2.5 miles of dark and tight passageways filled with muddy water and strong currents, as well as oxygen-depleted air.
