Hamilton hits out at Ferrari's 'interesting tactics' after Kimi clash

Sebastian Vettel opened a clear lead in the drivers' world championship on Sunday when he wrecked Lewis Hamilton's home-race party and claimed an impressive victory in a thrilling British Grand Prix.

Starting from the second position, Vettel took advantage of a bad start by Hamilton in pole position to lead the early stages of the 52-lap race at the Silverstone circuit, reported Efe. The polesitter had already been overtaken by Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas at the start.

This week he took issue with Hamilton's suggestion that Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen had deliberately crashed into him at the start of Sunday's race.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said after the race that he was "not comfortable at all with the incident because it's tiresome being taken out in the first lap". In [technical director] James Allison's words, 'do you think it is deliberate or incompetence?'. The Sauber driver lost the rear of his auto when he turned into the first corner with DRS still open and flew across the gravel and nose-first into the tyres.

"The reason Lewis didn't talk to me in the Parc Ferme is because he wanted time to go and calm down", Brundle explained to Sky Sports. Such emotion is what makes a sport otherwise dominated by data and technical details so fascinating to watch, but when the adrenaline subsides in Brackley the blame will no doubt focus on the true cause of Hamilton's missed opportunity: his poor getaway at the start.

"It was a hard race, but I gave it everything and I'm grateful to make it back up to second".

The incident that led to the first safety auto was a shocking crash for Sauber's Ericsson, who lost control at 180mph and ploughed into a tyre wall.

"Interesting tactics I would say from their side but we will do what we can to fight them in the next".

Hamilton made his way past Bottas on the following lap, with Raikkonen then taking his countryman for third, and that is how the leading four cars would cross the line in a frenetic ending.

"We also saw that in Austria because even there, Kimi is not driving for Sebastian".

However, Hamilton subsequently said he was "dumb" to imply Raikkonen might have deliberately collided with him.

"But, I mean. I want to give them a message - it's been a lovely battle, a battle that I think the audience appreciated".

Meanwhile, Hamilton who missed a chance of a sixth straight victory in his home race sent a message to his fans.

"Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes are in a different league to the other teams, their speed so superior that Formula 1 is a two-tier championship", says Rebecca Clancy in The Times.

Lewis said: "That lap took everything out of me, it was the toughest lap I've ever had to do in a qualifying session".

"I can't really comment as I don't know the thought process that went on there, but I do know there was widespread criticism of the leniency of the penalty given in France".

Vettel then passed Bottas five laps from the end, with the Finn's tyres fading, and Hamilton was also through a lap later and the chase was on to the finish with the German winning by 2.2 seconds.
