Trump blasts Brexit plan amid protests

Donald Trump arrives in Britain today for his first visit as USA president, flying into a whirlwind of protests against him and political turmoil over Brexit.

He told The Sun Mrs May's plan would affect trade "unfortunately in a negative way".

Mr Trump said ahead of his visit that he could meet Boris Johnson, who resigned earlier this week over Mrs May's Brexit plan. Trump insisted, however, that most in the United Kingdom were "delighted" about his visit even as he took a shot at London mayor Sadiq Khan for not taking a harder line on immigration and painted the city as a hub for terrorism.

Trump then heads to Windsor Castle later on Friday for tea with the queen.

US officials said that while Trump made the comments attributed to him, he also had more praise for May in parts of the interview that were not published. He added: "I would have done it much differently".

Trump said May "didn't listen" to his views on how she should negotiate Brexit, but that was "fine". The monarch carried her handbag on the arm nearest Mr Trump as they went to inspect soldiers of the Coldstream Guards on ceremonial duty. "She's a total professional because when I saw her this morning, I said: "I want to apologise, because I said such good things about you". She praised the friendship between the two allies, glossing over Trump's previous remarks that Britain was a "hot spot" in turmoil over Brexit. "Deals that take too long are never good ones", he said. "It was not the deal that was in the referendum". I have just been hearing this over the last three days. I think they agree with me on immigration."He added: "I think that's why Brexit happened. They are just a lobbyist for Amazon", he said". Anti-Trump protesters lined the road up to the building, but it is unlikely the Trumps - who arrived via helicopter - saw them.

May has insisted that her Brexit deal will allow Britain to strike its own lucrative trade deals with countries like the U.S. once her country has left the bloc as planned in March next year.

On Thursday, Trump will travel to Blenheim Palace, the 18th-century stately home where Britain's World War Two leader Winston Churchill was born and spent most of his childhood. We are cracking down right now on the European Union because they have not treated the United States fairly on trading.

But Trump poured cold water on May's offer.

Trump flew in to Britain on Thursday, having already subjected North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to a roasting over their levels of defence spending.

A high fence has been erected around the United States ambassador's central London residence where Trump will spend Thursday night and the embassy has sent out an alert warning Americans in London to keep a low profile in case protests turn violent. Trump smiled but did not say a word. Mr Trump said he would bring up the issue of nuclear disarmament with Putin.

Ms May's "business-friendly" Brexit plan - which would keep Britain in a free trade zone for goods with the European Union but mean it has to share some European Union rules - was agreed by her cabinet only last Friday after two years of wrangling since Britons voted to leave the bloc in a 2016 referendum.

His itinerary is keeping him largely outside of London in an apparent attempt to minimise his exposure to protesting crowds (and giant balloons depicting him as an orange, phone-clutching baby, like the one being flown near Parliament).

An inflatable, baby version of President Donald Trump could be appearing over his golf course in Scotland this weekend.
