  • Serena Williams Upset in Wimbledon Final

"That's fantastic." Williams had hoped to equal Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles by winning her first major prize since becoming a mother in September.

Serena suffered complications, including a pulmonary embolism, that led to several surgeries, after giving birth to her daughter via C-section. This marks Williams' first Wimbledon loss since 2008 when her sister Venus Williams won the title. Williams was mostly her own undoing, too: She was responsible for the final's initial six unforced errors.

Alexis Ohanian posted a photo of the tennis champion onto Instagram with the caption "just getting started". "They are really proud and without them I wouldn't be here, with all my family, they support me my whole life and I think they will drink tonight as well a little bit".

Attacking right-hander Graf relied on her big forehand and serve while left-hander Kerber is more of a counter-puncher, as she displayed to great effect on Saturday when dealing with the inevitable Williams barrage. I was really happy to get this far.

Kerber dropped to the grass when a netted service return gave her victory.

And Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, shared a story putting into perspective just how much Williams had come back from. "I'm the first German after Steffi to have won, that's unbelievable". "I came in here expecting that maybe I wouldn't get a seed".

Beaten but unbowed, Serena Williams is vowing to continue her relentless pursuit of tennis's most elusive feat despite falling tantalisingly short at Wimbledon. So I think these two weeks have really showed me that, OK, I can compete.

Kerber, born to a German father and Polish mother, was also quick to acknowledge the influence of Graf, who won 22 Grand Slam singles titles including seven at Wimbledon.

"It's obviously disappointing but I can't be disappointed", Williams said.

Williams is now likely to set her sights on the U.S. Open next month, when she will once again try to equal Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

Williams dedicated her performance against Kerber, who is now a three-time grand slam champion, to mothers around the world.

"If you want to go back to work, and to me after becoming a mum, I feel like there's no pressure to do that because having a child is a completely full-time job".

As a precaution, the tennis star had to wear a pair of special compression leggings. John Newcombe is the only other man in tennis history with 17 Grand Slam doubles trophies.

'It definitely didn't have any impact on me, ' she added. Kerber rises to No. 4 with the victory, while Williams is up from No. 181 to No. 28.
