Furyk unsure of Woods recall for Ryder Cup

  • US golfer Tiger Woods watches his iron shot from the 3rd tee during his final round on day 4 of The 147th Open golf Championship at Carnoustie Scotland

Francesco Molinari said he was immensely proud to become the first Italian to win a major after clinching the Claret Jug with a two-shot victory at Carnoustie yesterday.

On Sunday, 12 years later, Molinari was paired with Woods on the final day of a major and held off his charge to win the biggest title of his career.

Even as Jordan Spieth at the sixth, Xander Schauffele at the seventh and Tiger at the eleventh were digging themselves into the soil, Molinari busied himself with making a steady stream of pars. All he did at the BMW PGA Championship was go head-to-head with McIlroy in the final round and beat him by two. Six were still tied on the back nine. Molinari went bogey-free on the weekend on a course with some of the toughest holes in the world.

Molinari clinched it with a driver that skirted the edge of a pot bunker, leaving him a lob wedge from 112 yards to 5 feet.

Molinari raised his fist and shook it lightly before slamming it for emphasis.

The 35-year-old admitted he was in "disbelief" after having his name engraved on the Claret Jug despite his impressive form heading into the championship, due to his previous poor record. Playing with Tiger was another challenge.

"At the beginning of the year, if they'd said you're playing the Open Championship I'd have said I would be very lucky to do that".

"I hadn't felt the energy of the crowd for a while in the Open", said Rose, who had his best finish at his home major.

But asked to single out the decisive factor that's allowed him to make the step-up in the wake of Sunday's triumph, Molinari gave a more philosophical response.

Woods stumbled with a double bogey on No. 11.

Woods is expecting to hear from Williams, who lost the Wimbledon final to Angelique Kerber earlier this month, where they will discuss how their respective comebacks are going. Brooksy [Brooks Koepka] played another solid round [70]. "You see, those player agents".

NOTEWORTHY: Molinari was the only player from the last four groups to break par.

Woods closed with a 71 to tie for sixth, three shots behind.

Due to those back problems, this was Woods' first appearance in the event since 2015 at St Andrews and, though he was unable to land a win that would have been even more special due to the fact his two young kids, Sam and Charlie, it was a week he clearly enjoyed.

Francesco Molinari closed with a 2-under 69 for a two-shot victory.

CONSOLATION PRIZE: Woods moved to No. 50 in the world for the first time in more than three years.

Kevin Chappell made two double bogeys, the last one on No. 17 that derailed his hopes.

Not so long ago they were saying he was washed up, finished, but for a spell on Sunday it seemed as if Tiger Woods was ready to shove the words of his critics right back down their throats.

Schauffele was playing in the final pairing at a major for the first time.

To say thank you for the intervention, Woods gifted Hauck a signed glove, which for a fan was arguably worth the trouble of being hit on the head by a golf ball. "But there can only be one victor. I know that it's going to sting for a little bit here, but given where I was to where I'm at now, blessed".

His 69 left him eight under par, two shots clear of his nearest challengers including Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy, three ahead of Woods and four shots ahead of last year's victor Jordan Spieth.
