Iran on Monday dismissed Trump's angry warning that Tehran risked dire consequences "the like of which few throughout history have suffered before" if it made threats against the United States.

Major-General Qassem Soleimani challenged US President Donald Trump to address him regarding threats to Iran instead of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

The claims come as the US President this week fired off a thundering, all-caps tweet warning the Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, of war.

"Do not play with the lion's tail", he said, "because you will regret it eternally". "You are aware of our power in the region and capability for [launching] asymmetrical war?"

The Quds Force commander then noted Trump's "baseless" threats to hurt Iran in a way "few throughout history have suffered before", telling Trump to ask United States intelligence and security agencies about the country's inability to hurt Iran; "what could you have done against Iran in the past 20 years that you haven't done already?"

"Suleimani told Trump: "It is not in our president's dignity to respond to you, but I, as a soldier, will", before adding: "[Your] language belongs to cabarets. "Come on, we are ready, if you choose to start a war, we will be the ones to finish it".

The other countries involved in the Iran deal have vowed to uphold the agreement.

Extrapolating the 2018-19 purchases come to 25 million tonnes but there are now USA sanctions against Iran which block financial channels and payment routes.

Suleimani castigated the Trump administration for supporting the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MeK), an extreme Iranian opposition group that independent observers say is a cult-like organisation despised by most Iranians, with no visible support inside the country.

"HPCL faced problems in lifting cargo from Iran because its annual insurance policy was renewed in July after the US pulled out of the nuclear deal in May", said one of the sources, adding the company will not be able to lift any Iranian oil.

"Trump! You must not threaten our nation and must not insult our president..."

The US, which in May pulled out of a landmark nuclear deal and said sanctions will be re-imposed on Iran within 180 days, has threatened to cut off access to the American banking system for foreign financial institutions that trade with Tehran.

The Bab el-Mandab Strait, which is the southern entrance to the Red Sea, is one of the world's key shipping lanes for crude oil and allows crude exports into the European market.

Companies have until November 4 to fully wind down activities with Iran or risk exclusion from the USA financial system.

On Tuesday, Iran-backed Shi'ite Houthi rebels in Yemen attacked a Saudi oil tanker in the Red Sea causing "minor damage" to the ship, according to the Associated Press.
