Kavanaugh is meeting on Monday with Democratic Sen.
- Senator Rand Paul (@RandPaul) July 30, 2018Finally, his strong defenses of the First and Second Amendments in landmark cases show someone who isn't afraid to challenge the status quo and will fight with backbone.
Paul said last week he was "very concerned" about Kavanaugh's positions on privacy and the Fourth Amendment and remained undecided.
The dispute has become a focal point in the confirmation process, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accusing Republicans of "hiding" something in Kavanaugh's record. Manchin is facing a tough re-election battle in a state that went for Trump by double-digits in 2016.
Before Monday's meeting, Manchin said on Twitter that he was evaluating Kavanaugh's record, legal qualifications, judicial philosophy and "particularly his views on healthcare". He has also asked West Virginia residents to send him questions for the nominee. Democrats can sink Trump's nominee if they hold together and convince a single Republican to vote no.
Mr. Manchin said he hadn't made up his mind, but his office released photos showing the two men shaking hands and smiling broadly as they talked for two hours. That sit-down is scheduled for August 15.
Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.), one of three Democrats who supported Neil Gorsuch past year for the Supreme Court. Sens. Joe Donnelly of IN and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota were the others.
Analysts say the decision will be hard for Mr. Manchin, who is up for re-election in a state that Mr. Trump won by 42 percentage points in 2016. Manchin: "drop the political games, and support President Trump's highly-qualified pick for the U.S. Supreme Court".
With the absence of Sen. Republicans hold a 51-49 majority in the chamber.
With Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) unable to travel to Washington for health reasons, Republicans need unamimous party support for Kavanaugh in order to confirm him this fall. Joe Manchin III, West Virginia Democrat, met with Judge Kavanaugh on Monday.
The debate could interfere with Republicans' goal of swiftly confirming President Donald Trump's pick for the court in time for the start of the new term October 1. Republicans say the push for all documents related to Kavanaugh's time as staff secretary - a position that essentially has every piece of paper that heads to the President cross its desk - is unreasonable.
