Iran rules out meeting with Trump

The Iranian leadership has previously ruled out one-on-one talks with Trump, following his decision to pull the U.S. out of the deal under which Iran was given relief from sanctions in return for curbs on its nuclear program. It was a ridiculous deal.

This includes reimposing sanctions on Iran's purchases of US dollars as well as its trade in gold and precious metals.

On Monday he said he would be willing to meet with Iran's leaders "any time they want", with "no preconditions".

The president already has held summits with Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong Un. In early July, he threatened to disrupt oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz if new USA sanctions cut off its oil sales, which have already begun to decline as the US pressures allies to reduce purchases.

Rouhani typically attends the meetings in NY.

Hours before Trump's remarks, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said the USA president's policies regarding Iran ― including the withdrawal in May from the Iran nuclear deal and the reimposition of sanctions ― undermined any chance of engagement between the two nations.

"If the whole Iranian system had worked to implement this agreement, today we would be witnessing the presence of European companies in Iran and their investments, and even Trump would not be able to withdraw so easily from the deal", he said. I'm ready to meet any time they want to.

The White House clarified that even though the president is open to dialogue, this did not mean the United States would lift sanctions or re-establish diplomatic and commercial relations with Iran.

Also on Tuesday, the U.S. president said he has "a feeling" the Iranians will "be talking to us pretty soon".

But Trump seems to be the only one in favor of a meeting. He said this would be good for the US, Iran and the world.

Any such meeting, if ever scheduled, would surely tackle Trump's decision earlier this year to pull out of the Obama-era pact calling on Iran to scale back its nuclear program in exchange for reduced sanctions. The President has been a strident critic of Iran, threatening the regime with "consequences" as recently as July 22, while his administration pursues a strategy that many see as regime change in all but name.

Last week, tension between the United States and Iran escalated after Trump appeared to threaten military action against Iran in a tweet and Iranian officials vowed to resist any attempt to destabilise their country.

The Strategic Council on Foreign Relations was set up by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to help formulate long-term policies for Iran.

"Negotiations with the United States must not be a taboo", said Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, head of parliament's foreign affairs commission, in an interview with the semi-official ISNA news agency.

"Based on our bad experiences in negotiations with America and based on the USA officials' violation of their commitments, it is natural that we see no value in Trump's proposal", Kharazi said.

The top US diplomat and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will attend Saturday's meeting of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

After months of escalating rhetoric, Trump's offer to meet Iranian president marked a shift in tone.

President Donald Trump's announcement that he's willing to meet with Iran's leaders is receiving a mixed reaction from his secretary of state.
