Israel Says It Killed Suspected Islamic State-Linked Militants

  • UN peacekeepers return after 4 years to Israel-occupied Golan Heights near Syria

"We, the IDF, hold the Syrian regime, the Assad regime, responsible for everything that happens on the Golan Heights and any threat that emanates from the Golan Heights toward Israel".

When the situation stabilizes, Rudskoy said, the Russian-manned posts would be handed over to Syrian government forces.

Jordan and Israel said Thursday that their forces had killed Daesh (ISIS) militants who approached their borders after being squeezed out of southwestern Syria by the army of President Bashar Assad.

Israel seized 1,200 sq km of the Golan Heights from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognized by the worldwide community.

At the same time, Israeli authorities described the Syrian civil war as effectively over on Thursday and predicted that the Golan Heights frontier between the countries would be quieter with central rule by Damascus restored.

The incident took place in the southern part of the Golan Heights, where a demilitarized buffer zone was established between Israel and Syria.

Lieberman said Israel will have "no cause to intervene or operate in Syrian territory" if Damascus respects the 1974 disengagement agreement between the two sides - and as long as Syria doesn't become a staging ground for Iranian forces to attack Israel or transfer arms to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The move comes as Russian Federation continues to become more involved in Middle Eastern affairs after its military backing of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Russian Federation demanded the immediate access by worldwide humanitarian entities to the Rukban refugee camp, where it is suspected that the Pentagon carries out recruitment work among civilians to make up radical groups. On Thursday, Russia's defense ministry announced a joint operation with United Nations peacekeepers to keep watch over the Golan Heights region. An initial assessment by Israel's military identified the gunmen as Islamic State militants, in what would mark a rare attempt by the Islamist militants to infiltrate Israel.

Israeli jets also reportedly targeted Iranian military assets stationed in the Arab republic, killing Iranian military personnel south of Damascus and sparking outrage from Tehran.

Israeli troops were on "high alert and readiness" following the strike.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's sweeping away of rebels in southwestern Syria has anxious Israel, which believes it could allow his Iranian backers to entrench their troops close to the frontier.

Rebels still control substantial territory in northern Syria, mostly along the Turkish border.
